Selector forks or synchro mesh?
Sounds like the gear mechanics are OK (as the gear is working).
Still learning about synchro mesh myself as I'm more a bike engine (in the vehicle nature intended them to be in) type person so I don't
know if it would just make it akward or stop it engaging.

when going down the box, do you blip the throttle to match the revs of the engine to those of the wheels or do you just push it in and use the
syncromesh to sort the speeds out for you?

Was going to suggest does it do it if you double de- cluch when dropping it down a cog.
does it let you engage 4 th to 3rd when stationary and engine off ?

It goes in gear fine when stationary, and fine when going up the gears, but not down, i have bliped the throttle to match the revs but will not go in?
all other gears are fine.

it's the synchro gone - T5s lose it on 3rd & 4th. Not a bad job to fix DIY - you can get a kit of bits but you do have to dremel through one
of the bearing races on the mainshaft to get it apart.

Sorry mate - did it years ago & have now passed on all my T5 info to car & spare running gear new owners! I think the T5 manual (if it's
the cossie box you need the "world class" data) might be downloadable from tremec - I know I got a copy for free off the net.
From memory you pull off the input shaft & the tail extension & if you use a dremel to cut the rear roller race outer on the mainshaft into 2
bits you'll be able to wrestle out the mainshaft complete. This then comes to bits with pullers & mallets. There's at least one thing
located by a ball bearing in a little hole which is asking for you to lose it.
Getting the selector forks back into place when you're reassembling is a bit of an art! Follow the manual & you'll not go far wrong.
The overhaul kit (from some crew I've forgotten on the net) has nowhere near enough shims to set input shaft preload (or layshaft preload come
to that...) & the instructions for setting this are pie in the sky - you have to do it by altering until it feels right - just slightly stiff with
no rattle.
Use the recommended automatic transmission fluid, - normal gearbox oil will knacker it
S' all I can remember - have fun, I remember it as being quite a satisfying weekend job!
