cambelt problems

Hi chaps,

I am starting to prepare the ening for my
tiger avon,

its a 2L zetec. Im changing the cambelt
but cant get the crankshaft pulley off,
the bolt wont move-anyone got any ideas?

help appreciated!!

Welcome to the forum Les.

Apply more force is the simple answer. Securely hold the flywheel and use a long break bar with a quality socket.

I believe that bolt is done up (V)FT. Just hit it harder.

i guess you've locked the flywheel off or whatever? Try getting a long piece of box section and putting it on the end of the spanner to get more leverage, that should loosen it

BE CAREFUL! Those bolts are brittle - my mate broke his off inside (although the remains spun out with his fingers once the head broke off, and a replacement from Ford was cheap...). Try using a box-end spanner, and rap the head of the bolt with a hammer while you try turning it out.

I shouldn't be that difficult...mine came out quite easily once I cracked it loose. Silly question - you are turning it counter-clockwise, right?

Hi guys thanks for the replies,

yes turning anti-clockwise,
tried using a long breaker bar, the socket actually broke up!!

I was thinking that I must be missing something. Will buy a new socket tommorow having soaked it in wd40 overnight.
as you say, am worried it might strip or break off leaving my in real trouble!!

Where abouts are you? You may be near a forum member that has a decent air wrench and impact socket . Must have done loads of Zetec timing belts and have never had a problem getting one undone. Might be worth taking your engine to your local garage , they should be able to undo it in seconds .

i have the engine on a trolley, so could be an option, but if anyone is nearby help would be much appreciated!!

As Above, If you where nearer I would do it for you. DONT use the cam locking tool . make a Y spanner to hold the pullys.

Hi,

At the moment I have the old automatic
flywheel, wedged with a large screwdriver through the hole where i have removed the crank position sensor housing.
as you say suprising as all the other engine bolts have been relatively easy.

try hitting the crack bar whilst trying to undo the bolt ( some time the shck can help it)

I did mine a couple of weeks ago, and stretched a standard socket, as well. I then switched to an impact socket with a standard 1/2" ratchet, and that did the job nicely.

Keep working at it -- you'll get it.

hit it!

U must try to "break" the 32 mm bolt.
Anti clockwise,

Air-tool or 2 kg hammer must do the trick.

I won't work to "unlosing" it by turning with a big pipe or so. It goes to slow which can cause that you really break to bolt just in the tread

Ok guys,

bolt removed!! hit bar with hammer- that did it.

next problem is with cambelt. I followed haynes manuel to the letter, have some problems..

it was very difficult to get the camshaft alignment tool into the two camshafts, once eventually lined up, i swapped the cambelt. then rotated the crank through two turns as stated to check the belt

problem is there seems to be a slack point in the belt- tension seems fine until just before reaching the crank pulleyt marks- then a slightly slacker point appears between the two camshaft toothed pulleys.

anyone had this or have i messed up!!

Do you have a small spring on thje tensioner? Early Zetec engines didn't have one fitted , they should be modified when changing belt . Also how are you tightening the camshaft pulley bolts? are you using a cam holding tool ? you may find it's not long enough so that cam and pulley are turning slightly when cam bolt is torqued up ? that would alter tension on belt . DO NOT use cam timing tool to hold cam when torqueing bolt ! cam will break !HTH
