Marlin Roadster re-build - not strictly locost!

Hey guys and gals,

I have an old marlin roadster, based on Marina running gear - spring leaf suspension and all, and A-Series engine...BUT I also have a nice vauxhall 2.0 16v lying around and can easily get hold of a suitable omega gearbox. What other bits and bobs (axles / suspension etc) will I be needing to make this viable? It seems that for such a ground up change it makes better sense to ask here than on he Marlin forum.

Cheers,

Wee G

Hi, well first thing will be to dump the Marina axle, wont stand the power. I would suggest that you five link whatever axle you get, and spring with coil overs, but dont think that there is enough room on the Marlin chassis to do that. Probably have to stay with the leaf springs, and just fit an anti tramp system. Hows that for starters. Best of luck with the convertion, Ray

Axle suggestions? Does it just come down to finding an axle from a similarly powered car that fits? Whats commonly used in vaux powered kits / 7's?

Cheers,

Wee G.

Caterham used a Marina live axle for a good few years because it was stronger than the Ford Escort "English" axle.

I think you will find that the Cateringvan used the marina axle when they were fitting 1600 Xflow's. Dont know what the track is on the Marlin, same as Marina, but dont know that either, (so not much help there), . I would use an axle from a car that has same or more than the BHP of your intended engine. If it turns out to be wider, then you will need to fit wider rear wings, alter the ones on the car, will only be a couple of inches each side at the most. Axle fron a 3ltr Capri, something like that. I'm sure I've seen Marlins with V8's do a search on the web. Saying that I think they are still being produced but under a new name.

OK,

Cateringvan Supersprint (apparently) went with Marina axle and developed 135bhp with 120ft lbs of torque. Seeing as I'll want more than that, I'll need more axle. Will try to find out dimensions of some available choices and see what fits best.

The new marlin v8's share very little with the older cars but i know marlin did at one point offer a v8 as standard, i think when YKC still owned them. Cheers for the input folks,

G

A good Ford English axle should be able to cope ok with a stock 20XE in a light car, plenty of Escorts around running this arrangement ok.

They do tend suffer a bit if the engine is tuned 16v's and slicks are fitted though.

Martin,

No worries mate - I have a big ole box of marina spares, 2 engines, recon 4 speed box, carbs etc all lying around. If / when i get the new engine in and the rest of it "sorted" it will all come up for sale.

Cheers,

G
