Swapping Zetec/Type9 for an MX5 1.6 gbox

Hi everyone, first post!

Instead of using a Ford Zetec / Type 9 gearbox, my son might be swapping out the 1.6 from his MX5 and giving it to me. Question is, does anyone have any experience of this swap, are the MX5 gearboxes drastically different in size in relation to the tunnel size compared to the Ford equivalents? I'm actually putting it into a Fury, and am happy to get a couple of extra mounts made/altered but space is fairly tight.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I suspect the bolt pattern will be different, but not sure.

MX5 Engine & Box fit nicely into a striker without mods. Fury will be fine...

Ah thanks everyone.

He's quite happy to give me the gearbox as well, so shouldn't be a problem to go down that route, but I already have a Ford live-axle (3.9) in place, but that will just be a small matter of making the engine mounts and a prop too... If I've done the maths correctly, on 14" wheels should be geared to 159mph @ 7500rpm.

The old mx5 diff was 4.3:1 with 14" wheels & gave 19.3mph/ik revs in 5th. Thats from memory - how sad am I....
You've a bit of engineering to do to replace the PPF !

Bob C thanks but "PPF"? Or am I too old? Probably the latter!

Power Plant Frame - an alloy C section beam running down the trans tunnel - acts as gearbox mount & reacts differential torque.
I've only ever seen it in an mx5. I think the real reason for doing it that way was that it tied all the running gear (inc. front & rear subframes) into a single assembly that could be offered up to the bodyshell - ie done for production engineering purposes

Thanks Bob! I'll do some more digging and see what needs changing. It's currently engineered for the Ford box and engine.
