Gunson's Colourtune

I was thinking of buying one of these to keep the crossflow mixture adjusted, but are they reusable or are they use once and dispose?

Are they still selling these? I had one of these in the 70's iirc. A glass topped spark plug so you can see the colour of the flame burn?

I would have thought a CO probe would be a better guide to see if you are running rich - or why not get it mapped?

They are reusable but I have to say I find them very difficult to use.

I get better results tuning by ear.

Cheers

Still available, and a brilliant home tuning aid. And yes, it's still a crystal spark plug. Reusable until you break the glass. Most useful when you don't have any ( expensive? ) electrical stuff instead.

Has far as I know they are reusable! I was looking at them myself in halfords but opted for the Gunson`s digital CO% reader so that I can set the carbs up for SVA

Don't think I could get it mapped, it's old school crossflow.
I just thought it would be a simple way of doing it. Have been doing it by ear but worry that I might get it too lean and melt something.
Does CO% reader do the same thing, and if so how much are they?

It is worth remembering that the Colortune thingy will only allow you to set up the tickover mixture afaik - unless you can lean over to have a peek when doing a power run !

You will only really melt something under full throttle conditions so a lambda / CO probe might give you a better idea about mixture under load. Setting up carbs is often a 'seat of the pants' thing and changing a jet or needle position can make a hell of a difference.

Yes, admittedly it will only set at low(ish) revs, but if the engine is near standard, as I think it is in this case, then it won't be far out all the way up.

Thanks fellas, being a bit "careful" with my money, I don't want to be splashing out on anything that won't make a difference.

Think Iv'e still got four (at least one, after my last i've got you can borrow). Great tool useful for setting up single and multi carb installs AND you can use them throughout the rev range. Just hold the throttle steady at the revs you want to check and it will tell you when you look down them what the fueling it doing, so you can make adjustments where necessary.

Yup. I'd have to say it's a useful tool. HC was way off on the left bank at the first SVA test, used the colortune and it passed fine the second time.... Worth the money in my book then....
A CO meter wouldn't necessarily have been as useful and I keep on chickening out of buying the full Krypton setup!
