Alfa V6
I am looking at preparing another engine for my car. The existing engine has done a lot of miles and i can get hold of another with low miles.
I was looking to try and extract about 250BHP from the unit. Nothing too extreme propably new cams etc.
Has anyone on the forum tuned an Alfa V6, would a different ECU make a big difference?
I dont want a screeming monster , just a reliable 250 bhp.

Are sticking with a 12v lump or are you upgrading to a 24v one?
I believe someone is writing a book on the Alfa V6 and its tuning but its not yet released (a bit annoying as I have one on pre-order)

No I haven't tuned one, but without a doubt the answer is to bin the std injection system.
Yours is a 12v isn't it?
Fit a 24v for a start, along with a mappable ECU and some throttle bodies. That should get you very close to 250hp (the std 24v engine is 220
isn't it? ) while not breaking the bank (if you use bike throttle bodies! ) and maintaining complete reliability.

24v
I did think of the 24v, but its about 20kgs heavier and needs adifferent loom.
Standard its about 20hp more, but a lot more expensive to obtain and parts are not as cheap.
And the 24v does not sound as good as the 12v.

John,
An other ECU won't make any appreciable difference. As others said, get a 24V in there, get some big inlet runners on (there were two kinds,
large and small bore. I beleive it was 42 or 45 mm) fit a decent exhaust / air filter (old style 24V exhaust manifolds are not bad at all, don't
know if they'll fit though...) and you should be on your way to 250 BHP.
I've worked for an alfa tuner briefly, and a pretty tricked (but tracktable!) out 3.0 24V made something like 240 bhp at the front wheels (alfa
156)
If you want to stay with the 12V, 250 bhp is a long shot....

I'm using a 3.0L 12v as well.
Have done a little bit of looking around at tuning, although solid information is quite hard to come by.

12v and 24v alfa engines are popular choices in stratos replica's and thers plenty of people playing with them.
Theres a guy called rutter the nutter who's had 12v and 24v engines and seems to know his stuff.
I think for 250Bhp, you'll either need different cams (EB spares sell them) and an aftermarket ecu or a couple of turbo's.
I found a website a while ago - a guy who's experimenting with turbo'ing his 164 and had got to something like 450Bhp I think.
Can't remeber what he'd done...sorry!

Don't agree to that!
That air flow meter only takes away 10BHP go bike throttle bodies and mega squirt!
if you cant get it then at 250BHP then you could always fit a 24valves version.

Try http://forum.alfa145.com/ there's a guy on there (Gary) that fitted a V6 in a 145, his user name is
V6Inside, do a search and there's alot on there, very nice and helpful guy. Might also be worth trying

about the engine and getting the best from it he (Roger) might be willing to have a chat.
Or look for a cheap GTA engine and thats your 250bhp sorted

The GTA is a 3.2 24v and a great option, but not very cheap. Looking at £2,000 just for the engine. I'll chase up an American company that
provide camshafts, fast road for around £250 a pair. That will give me around 25 horse plus a decent air filter may give another ten. Low cost is
the name of the game and the budget is definitely on the cards. Thanks for the responses.
