@ Wheel Horsepower for Yamaha R1
What is the observed.... er felt.... wheel horsepower of a Yamaha R1 engine from anybody that owns one?
I've seen figures ranging from 160 to 200.... that's quite a big difference.

I think the 07-08 one is about 180bhp in a stock bike. Not sure about others.
edit: should read OP properly. my figure isnt a "at wheel" value. sorry.

We gain knowledge faster than we do wisdom!
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in
sideways, thoroughly used, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming... "f*ck, what a trip!"

what year engine do you want figures for?
200 bhp at wheels is not likely!

All I know is my mate had an early R1 (2000 IIRC) on carbs and it would pull a wheely in any gear, at any speed and at any revs with a twist of the
throttle

I've heard the 05 was a good year so let's say I'll use that one. I'm planning a MK Indy build hopefully shortly and want to
use the R1.
I do like the 09 with the whole cross plane crank shaft business, but that kinda defeats the purpose of locosting.

Anywhere between 130 and 140 rear wheel horsepower is the norm for an 98-2003 R1. Later generation R1's might sneak upto mid 140's if they
are lucky.
Anyone claiming 160 at the wheels is talking boll*cks unless they have spent a fortune of tuning the engine or are using a Rolling road with
over-inflated power figures (good for customer satisfaction...)

Thanks for the replies.....
Next step I guess is which bike engine would be the best combination of power and frugality?

For the number of miles per year and the speed it's likely to be driven I'd not worry too much about frugality.
In reality (at least on the road) there aint a massive difference between all the stock bike engines, maybe a few 10ths to 60. If you're a big
chap it might be worth going for something with a little more torque to help things along (hence I picked the ZX12).
R1 seems a good choice and well trodden path.

Agreed. Mine is 132 at the wheels at Holeshot after it was dynojetted. I've got it to 62 in 4.3 seconds (race technology ap22) and I'm
crap at pulling away.

Yeah, I'm figuring about 75% road use and 25% track time. I've seen (and heard) those ZX series engines and they sound wonderful.
I'm not a real big chap bout 86kg but the extra torque would be welcomed.

the r1 should be up to 2003 145bhp as its the same bhp as the thunderace but not as fast as the ace in a line up to 100mph as the thunderace has only
5 gears the thunderace is 0-60 in 2.4 0-100 in 6.0 an0-100 then stop dead is 10.2secs. and the engine is stronger than the r1 one ask any yamaha
machanic.
