valve guide seals - necessary?

.... about to fit valves to my head and the standard rubber cup valve guide seals do not fit - too big for the guide and the inner spring - arse.

so are they necessary? (new valces and guides).

I reckon yes so better start phoning ....

Re valve stem seals.

Yes, yes, never leave these out or will smoke / use oil.

.... thought so ... oh well, tools down whilst I try to find some seals

man said O-rings would do and he is expecting the seal tomorrow so I'll guess I'll have to wait.

dunno - size is as follows:

valve stem dia = 7.9mm
guide dia = 11.2 mm
inner spring dia = 15.7 mm or less

I have 2 sets but they are standard seals - ones I am after fit over smaller diameter guide and sit inside an inner spring - dims as above.

bad planning on my part ...

I know a few people running without them.

Generally only get a puff of blue smoke on start up if the car has been standing any length of time, after that not a problem.

It will use a little bit more oil though.

I used (original) mini 1275cc valve stem seals on my old crossflow, the original ones wouldn't fit 'cos of the double valve springs. It's a common enough mod.

Might be worth giving these guys a bell?

I know they're not local to you, but they were really helpful when I was looking for rings for my oversize pistons.

Hope you get some sorted.

On tuned turbo cars they even machine a a chamfer in the top of the guide to encourage oil down and do away with the seals.

If the guides are in good condition not really required unless you are expecting 6000 mile service/oil top up interval, it will use a little oil without and puff on startup and long overruns without them.

I only use them on inlets myself.

Regards Mark
