Ford S-Max 2.5 turbo strange noise - help please? (Sound attached)
Hi guys,.
My boss has a Ford S-Max 2.5 Turbo Titanium. This is the one with the 220BHP Volvo T5 petrol engine as used in the Focus ST. It is just coming up on 3
years old and has done just under 40k miles. It was in for its 37.5k mile/3 year service last week and it was noted as an advisory that the alternator
belt was squealing and may need attention.
My boss has never had any problems with his alternator belt and so asked me to come out and have a listen. We quickly came to the conclusion that the
noise was not the alternator but may be more sinister as it was coming from the turbo area down the back of the engine.
The symptom is as follows:
1. Mixture of whistle, whirr and squeal when blipping the throttle to the floor very briefly from idle. This noise is a bit like the noise you can
make by whistling while using the tip of your tongue to make a whirring sound. I hope that makes sense...
2. The noise disappears immediately after a blast round the block but if the car is allowed to idle for 45 seconds to a minute the noise comes back
(only when blipping the throttle as in 1. above. The noise is not continuous.) To me this may be the turbo spinning back down to idle after a blast.
The noise is only apparent as the throttle is blipped and quickly becomes inaudible.
3. Arnold Clark have had the car for 3 days "diagnosing it" and have booked a Ford field engineer to come in on Tuesday for investigation
as they can't figure it out. My boss was given the car back this afternoon and got 100 yards before the turbo inlet pipe blew off but
that's another story...
Any ideas what could be causing this? My thoughts are that it is damaged blades either on the compressor or turbine (probably turbine) but it seems
strange that it only just started after the service. This service includes spark plug replacement and I wonder if they have dropped something down the
spark plug hole or dislodged some carbon or something. Maybe dropped something into the intake hole when changing the air filter?
I would appreciate any suggestions as to what might have caused this if anyone has any ideas.
Cheers,
Craig.

Manifold gasket leak. Possibly due to a snapped stud or two.

Yes possibly but why would the sound increase in pitch and why would the sound go away for 45 seconds after a blast down the road?
Are you aware of an issue with breaking manifold bolts?

Here is a voice memo I just recorded on my phone. Hopefully you can read this file format. If not I will convert it to an MP3 tonight.
Cheers,
Craig.

Sounds like the typical charcoal canister whistle that loads of cars make.

Hi Mike,
yeah but it's only just started doing it since the service and it has even got worse over the last week or so.
By the way, I recorded the sound via the driver's front wheel arch as the sound is loudest down there and under the front jacking point.
Cheers,
Craig.

Hi,
just wondering if anyone else has any ideas what might be causing this noise.
Note, in case you missed it, I posted an attached sound file a couple if posts ago.
Thanks,
craig.
