Pinto Running Problems
I've just started the engine for the first time (2.0 pinto, standard, 30/34 DFTH, Ford ESC2 management, Bosch dizzy), fired straight away and
run but wouldn't idle, it was just spluttering and then it would die.
The ignition was a bit retarded IMO as it was spitting a bit through the carb and throwing the odd flame out the tailpipe. I advanced the dizzy a bit
till it would hold an idle at about 1050rpm but the timing light shows this is about 38BTDC!!!!!! I'm confused.
Pissed about with it some more and got a reasonable idle at about 950-1000 with the advance at 10BTDC with the vcuum pipe off and plugged (to the
ecu), no octane adjust wires were present in the donor so they are not to be worried about. With these settings it's throwing loads of smoke
out, smells really rich, I was chocking in the garage
Anyway, can't set the timing on it and get no smoke out of it at the same time. When it first fired up there wasn't much in the way of
smoke really, just what you'd expect from a fresh lump.
It's got a bosch dizzy with hall effect sensor in it, the manual said to line up the centre of the rotor arm with the line in the body to get a
base setting (with the crank at 8BTDC) but when I then fit the cap the arm looks to be just passing the carbon bit for No1 so that seems wrong too. I
know this base setting shouldn't matter if I can get it to run, then time it with the strobe though.
Just took the plugs out and they are all clean, if a little wet with oil but I think thats because there was oil in the bores / around the rings when
building it more than anything else.
Compression is ok and even at about 170psi per cyl (new rings etc) New plugs, new leads, cap, arm etc, coil is new. Leads and cap tested to be ok with
the meter.
Any good ideas? besides bike carbs and megajolt
Cheers

The engine will smoke till it has been run for a while what have you done to the engine
may need the carb adjusting
i used to run my standard 1640 pinto at 14 btdc
i run my tuned 2040 pinto at 15btdc and 1.5 to 2% co
ps if i run mine up in the garage i have to leave cause it smells rich bit is not thats because we are used to catalyst cars these days

Yeah it's smoky and I expected that but it just seems excessively smokey, visibly so. I know it needs to be run for a bit though, need to find a
suitable pipe to duct it out of the garage.
Mine's a std 2.0 with an injection head, std cam et all.
Anyone got any base settings for the weber 30/34dfth? All the jets are clean etc, just the idle air screw I guess. Choke opened quick enough and
stayed open so that seemed ok.
On the plus side, my polo exp bottle and rad with elec fan worked great, got up to 94 at the head then the fan cut in, so that's a silver lining
I guess..........
Thanks
