Engine choice = reliability
Although Im a little way off getting the engine, I thought I'd ask as to the pro's and cons of 4cyl engines.
I like the vauxhall redtop.
I dont want bike engine.
I want reliability and good speed.
Any suggestions to anything other than the vauxhall lump and pro's and con's to them. I am also like many many others on a tight (ish)
budget.
Any advise on engine options and choices welcome.
Thanks in advance.

there's vauxhall ecotec and ford zetec and duratec. don't know the pros and cons between them all, but
ecotec is same block as red top, slightly down on power, but newer, and more of them available so cheaper. type 9 fitmaent is dead easy.

Get your self a 2.0 ltr Duratec, nice light weight aluminium engine and relativity easy to get 200 BHP.
It also has timing chain not rubber belt for that extra piece of mind -loads of tuning parts available
Duratec Engine is fitted, MS2 Extra V3 is assembled and tested, engine running, car now built. IVA passed 26/02/2016

duratec engine, as said light weight, good power, just a bit more cost than a zetec to do, but well worth it

Duratec or forget the 4 cylinder and go for 6
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

I have to agree, if i was to do it again it would have to be a Duratec, light all alloy easily tunable, a lot of rally boys i know are using it and
moving away from redtops simply for the fact it's newer, the redtops still a damn good engine though.
Must try harder

I'm biased but for £1500 you can get a 300bhp as standard m3 lump and gearbox. engine is the same weight as a red top, gearbox is lighter than
a type 9 etc.
For £400 you can get a 328i engine and box which makes 220bhp with £80 worth of mods lighter than a red top.

If on a budget a Zetec is hard to beat.
Mine cost £55 for a low mileage 2.0 plus £250 ish for ignition and carbs= around 150 BHP.
Bolts straight up to a type 9.
If I wasn't being tight i go Duratec though.

I would say a Toyota 4AGE and preferably the later 20V engines and leave them be as they are great engines in standard form with ITBs as standard.
However the conversion kit to convert to the type 9 can bump up the price. The toyota RWD boxes can be hard to get as well for easonable money.
Silly answer - How about about a Chevy L92 which is a 6.2L V8 with DoD (displacement on demand). On light cruise the engine management alternately
shuts of cylinders so the engine effectively runs as a 4 cylinder. Oh and not cheap to buy either so just ignore.

Got to agree, Zetec has to be the best budget engine although you can double (and a bit) Whitestu's estimate if you're going to fit a
decent exhaust manifold

Good point! I knew I had forgoton something. The same cost applies to the other choices too, except possibly the Nissan 200 engine.
I did mine on the cheap by fitting a secondhand Westfield CVH manilfold.

I agree with the zetec route.
I paid £50 for my 60,000 mile 2.0 silvertop, then £200 for the exhaust and £150 for the carbs and jolt.A home made inlet and job done.
£400 for the install,thats on a budget.

the other good point about the 328 lump is its 220bhp on standard injection and without taking the motor apart so you get factory reliability along
with the noise a straight 6 makes

I'd go Duratec or S2000. M3 lump would be great if you were building an AGM WLR

sticking to any pre 95 engine will save you the need for a CAT to get through the test - but even that isn't a massive problem
depends what you want from the engine really - personaly I'm a fan of the big old iron lump running on carbs

yes but did you have to, my pinto was free - then I went mad and spent more than duratec money on it

Cosworth V6.
£150 with 200hp out of the box.
Fits a type 9 with an alloy bellhousing, and has poo loads of torque and power capabilities.
Not good if youre short on space though it is 60 degree V not 90 degree so its fairly slim for a V6.
Kindest Regards,
Richard.

Zetec mines on the standard ecu.
Its cheap.
Its reliable.
It needs no maping.
I think I can get 150bhp at the fly and thats plenty for me. 150 horsses @ 550kg should be plenty

cheaper option= zetec
more expensive= duratec
the duratec is easily the better engine but a zetec is more than a enough for most people in a light weight kit plus if you blow it up a replacement
is cheap and easy to find
