1:92 diff with R1

just got the diff off my donor sierra, and it turns out it is a 1:92 diff with bolt on shafts.

now im building an MK indy R with R1 engine.

am i right in thinking that it won't be a very good ratio?

will it be fine to startwith? and put a 3:38/3:62 at a later date once its built?

cheers

If it's 3.92:1 then it'll be OK but a bit low geared. You'll top out just over 100mph

check out the gear ratio sticky at the top of the BEC section.

yes it is a 3:92.

that doesn't sound too bad, and i assume the acceleration would be very good?

then when im bored i can fit a 3:38 to get more top speed.

ive tried to use that gear ration calc, but i don't have excel, if anyone can give me anymore info, that would be great.

It won't be a 1.92 but may be a 3.92. 3.92 would give very quick acceleration off the line but a limited top speed and it would be very revvy on the motorway. I had a 3.62 and it was fine though a 3.38 might have been better.

im using a 3.92, the acceleration is awesome, but it tops out at 110 at the limiter.
on the motorway you do about 8000 rpm. (a very honest 70)
im thinking of going 3.6ish.

What size are the wheels/tyres? if they are 15" it will be fine, if they are 13" it will be undergeared probably

put a 3.6 or 3.38 in now you can still get a 3.6 at reasonable money and it will save you the ball ache of changing it after two weeks use !!. i have a 3.38 in my zx10 and its still reving at 8000 at 80mph, acceleration will be awesome even with a 3.14 but at least it wont be reving its tits off all the time.

You can't say that in isolation without making reference to the tyre width and profile. I.e. 185/70-13's having a bigger rolling radius than 195/45-15's etc.

Either way a 3.92 diff is very short!

As said a 3.62 is fairly cheap and even 3.38's are reasonable.

Its 3.14's that command a chunk more cash.

Exactly that's why I said quote "What size are the wheels/tyres?" and I used the word "probably" without knowing all the information I shouldn't have speculated
