Rover K series - Dizzy to Electronic ignition. Whats involved?

Getting frustrated now. Got some lovely fast cams but my existing engine runs on a dizzy and rotor arm on the end of the inlet cam. All I want to do is either remove the spigot insert from the end of the cam (but cant get an answer how) or buy a new one and even QED who have them on their web site say they cant get them anymore.

If the last option is change to electronic ignition what will this involve work and parts wise. I can do the work on the dizzy setup to install the new cams but don't have a clue about mems and stuff. I'm running on an emerald 3D and bike TB's. Does this make other considerations?

British trident.. Adi.. where are yoooouuuuuu?? haha

IIRC they are pressed in and are a very tight fit. If you got yourself a scrap cam you could probably cut it out worst case.

If not then EliseShop have the part for £26.91 (probably plus vat and postage though)

QED also have it listed for £28.10

It may still be an option. Just spoke to the cam manufacturers who said they won't pull out but can be hacksawed out or lathed out but shame the old cam has to be ruined.

Whats involved changing to Electronic ignition with an Emerald 3D? It already has EFI just still got dizzy and coil ignition.

is the emerald picking up the rpm/tdc from the hall on the distributor or do you have a separate crank position sensor?

I have got a k series flywheel with crank sensor that you can use you should be able to run wasted spark off of that if the emerald supports it.

The early K-series engines (without full electronic ignition) didn't have a normal points type distributor. They have a similar system to the early C20XE engines; a crank sensor and spark distributor.

All you need to do is get yourself something like a DTA S40 ECU, a full management loom, a wasted spark twin coil pack and you're away

Note: depending on the sensors you use, you may need a slightly different loom than the one linked above.

Oh and the spigot rotor arm should be available in 3-4 weeks

Thanks but I already have a £700 Emerald and cant justify another £500+ for another ECU.

However.. I have got it out!!!!

The solution was a hacksaw on the end of the old cam. Cut almost down to the spigot and the a big screwdriver tapped into the gap to open it up and out she popped. OK if its in an old cam but not much good if its in a posh cam that has a second hand value.

Thanks folks.

The Emerald supports wasted spark. Given the choice I'd have ditched the distributor and fitted a coil pack.

This is why I was asking - What do I need and how much will it cost?. The above solution ditches my Emerald and costs me another £800ish so not really a solution. This was actually about a cam change but if its not too much cash or work it could be considered. So what is the locost way keeping the emerald what else would be needed?

To convert the Emerald to run the ignition would need a few extra wires put into the ECU multiplug, a coil or a pair of coils depending which way you go about it , multiplugs for the coils and HT leads and that's about it . You already have the crank sensor, TPS and CTS.
