ca18det rebuild
i bought a running engine from ebay as it had a brand new turbo, i'm not sure how many miles its done but the car was a rear ender and looked
tidy.
what should i be changing and upgrading before iinstall itinto the endy and replace the ca18et, i understand these engines can suffer with bottom end
probs.

I would go for oe spec from nissan, everything i have bought for my sr20 i have got from nissan, it tends to be the best quality and about the same
cost and it fits, there is nothing worse than getting pattern parts for a couple of quid less and them not fitting propperly, been there too many
times

oil pump, bearings (big ends 1st, maybe mains depending on how they look inc thrust faces) and defo clean out all the breather pipes and remove the
cam covers and clean out all the sh*te. Even on well known, well looked after engines, they suffer from clogged breatehrs anyway, which depending on
who you believe is a major contributor of death rattle. Id also agree that in almost all cases OEM Nissan is better than the aftermarket stuff.
check the bearing shell sizes when you remove them, as nissan has a grading system on top of the sizes. Basically you get (iirc) 5 grades 0-4 of each
shell size, std, +25 and +50. Cranks do tend to suffer if the shells arent caught early, and sometimes the thrust faces can be damaged on the crank if
its been totally abused.
CAS splines on the exh cams can become worn giving vague timing, but whip it off and have a shufty, not a difficult thing to check.
In my experience of both ETs and DETs, its almost always wee poor maintenance/oil changes from previous owners coupled with sticking a chunk more
boost up em that causes issues. Youve defo got the right idea by checking it over before thrahsing the conkers off it

As above really - I had an S13 with this engine in and it was good for 300bhp with just simple mods. Just watch the boost levels and use a progressive
controller. They are great engines but do tend to eat big ends.
