RV8 drillings next to valve springs

The engine in my viento has been making a noise that sugests the tappits are worn so ive started to replace them. On removal of the rocker covers the alloy web that the rocker cover screws go into has been drilled away to allow room for the valve springs. Is this normal on the RV8? Kenton
Ps i cant seem to put a pic on this post so will add it to my archive

If you are pulling it apart its also helpful to drill a couple of 1/2" holes where the oil collects in the front of the block down by the first followers towards the chain casing, it helps lub the chain.
