First start up after winter. What should I do?

Hi all,

I will be starting the car for the first time this weekend since last summer, about 5-6 months.

I have changed oil and filters but dont know how to prime the oil for the engine.

Its a 4age 20 V

Any ideas?

What else should I do or check before cranking?

I will check electrics and gauges to make sure they work and obviously ill bolt check. Its just the engine im not sure about. I don't want to cause loads of damage in about 20 mins!!

I will run it in gear up on axle stands until the water and oil get to temp and check all cooling.

Cheers

Biz

I can't see that there should be any issues. As long as it was running fine last year and you've checked all the fluids etc. Just chek the oil pressure comes up OK and there are no obvious leaks.

After all, I've read that some engines have sat for 2 or 3 years and people still get them running after a few minutes of common sense checks.

Just don't giver it beans until your happy.

I have read how to get pressure out, does this sound correct?

Take one plug out to allow stress free turn over, Disconnect coil to prevent plug.

Then turn over and watch the gauge.

Fingers crossed, if the electrics are ok it will be going in the next couple of hours.

Please wish me luck all, I'm actually quite nervous, never done this sort of thing before!!

If worried about the oil pressure, yep, take out plugs and whizz the engine over for a few seconds. Coil disconnected a good idea.
But as it is a short time that it was last running (try 17 years!) then I wouldn't worry.

Most 60 plate cars will have stood longer than that, and they get started thrashed across a field to the transporter!just check your core plugs after that cold spell we had.

Its all running cool.

My temp gauges arnt working though which is a pig. Sender units are fine and fan kicks in.

Now I have to see if there is an random issue with Smiths gauges.

Thanks all
