Zetec / bike carbs / emissions

Hi, wondering if anyone can provide factual answer to following problem...

Bought a luego velocity in early stages of construction (rolling chassis) and have been re-doing everything properly - previous owner had lots of good ideas but not thought through. Biggest hurdle is the parts included a 2.ol zetec silver top, t9 box and zx9r carbs...

Here is the problem I've just dated the engine and it's a 98 zetec - is there ANY way this will get through age related (98) emissions test running on bike carbs? If the answer is def. Not then what's the most cost effective solution? Have ordered a manifold from DanST and paid deposit so anything involving keeping majority of parts would be great!

I've heard / read that it can't be done but with a decent cat and suitable map.... Maybe? Have considered getting an older zetec engine and rebuilding using just the block and all the newer bits, not sure what to do having come this far to find current set up probably won't get through emissions is a bit depressing

Any help appreciated, thank you.

Well it SEEMED like a good idea!

I swapped from twin webbers on my crossflow which I could never get through the emissions at MOT time, but the engine gets through on just visible smoke test.
I fitted zx9 carbs and had it tested , it passed emissions with flying colours with no jetting. The tester said it could not be any better!
The car runs a load better, ticks over smoothly, and goes miles further on fuel.
Regards Denis.

Where did that go?

I cannot help with 'Can it be done', but I am building a fury with a 95 silvertop.
I have a set of ZX6R carbs, a Boggs Brothers manifold and a megajolt to fit.

I purchased the engine and was told to do a top overhaul before installing it as the mileage was not known. (and it would be a pain to do it later if it smoked....).

I needed new rings, and while it was stripped so far, I replaced the shells (main and big ends) and I had the bores honed.
New gaskets, new exhaust valves and I also replaced the Water and oil pumps.
I Did not want to ruin all the new bits with low oil pressure or lose the water through a duff pump seal.

I had the head skimmed as recommended by many and I am in the process of rebuilding it now.

Total cost of rebuild is approx £500.

There was a guy selling a silvertop on here already sorted a month or two ago.
I had already purchased my engine then - Doh.

I do recomend trying to get a clean runner - maybe just for the IVA ....

HTH

I'd just look out for a cheap pre-95 zetec and fit that, then fit whatever you want once you're road legal, the emissions test you'll need to pass at MOT will be the same as at IVA.

Our 130ps zetec cost £50 delivered off ebay. For that price, for me, they're disposable.
