Mazda V6
Mazda V6
Always assumed I was heading down the BEC route but something keeps tugging me towards a fast reving car engine as a possible compromise. It’s going
to be mid-engined and I absolutely loath the compromise of a transverse engine, so it has to be a north south instillation, so transaxle drive!
So after reading some of Claire’s posts I was thinking maybe a Mazda V6 mated to a VW/Audi or Subaru transaxle might tick the following boxes;
aesthetic (think of trumpets on downdraft TB’s poking up), acoustic (v6 soundtrack at 8k rev’s) and the power of 200hp?
So some questions:
Is there a particular version of this engine that is a best starting point?
Tuning limitations - Throttle bodies, gas flowed heads and balanced standard bottom-end, what can I expect for power and max rev’s?
Am I mad – Either in the basic idea or on a cash needed for performance gained basis

I've thought about putting a Mazda V6 onto a transaxle - and agree it would look and sound amazing
The easiest to obtain is the KLDE - Ford Probe , Mx6 , Masda 6 (and a few others I cant remember just now....) - 167 bhp stock , but with throttle
bodies and megasquirt over 200 , with a safe 8000 rev limit .
Tuning-wise , the bottom end is good for 450+ bhp with no mods - the steel crank and rods are virtually unbreakable . There isnt much scope for head
work - the ports are only about 2 inch's long , and already pretty straight .
The best gains come from a compression hike and lumpier cams - forged high comp pistons are available up to 12.5 to 1 , cams are regrinds from Colt
Cams in Canada .
Add a set of better valve springs and titanium retainers , and you can be looking at 250+ whp - how about
this !
Its cuz I is blond , innit

Have a look at my blog on the link below.
There are a couple of options;
VW Audi engine on transaxle (Passat or 3.2 TT engine would be awesome)
Renault 21 turbo with UN1 transaxle
Cosworth YB with UN1 Transaxle (additional bell housing needed tho c.£350)
Porsche 911 Engine and box
Or for a bit of work;
Mazda V6 on a UN1 / VAG transaxle
Cosworth 24V V6 and UN1 transaxle (i have made drawings for an adapter plate to be developed)
Cologne V6 2.8 / 2.9 - As cossie V6 (Same block) but only 12V. Good engine tho and i have carbs and inlet for one if needed.
My findings For information;
UN1 costs £150 - £200 second hand. Make sure its a UN1/013 - the strongest out of the R21T
Cosworth BOB / BOA V6 is about £300 but becoming scarce
Renault 21 J7R engines are around and very strong, but parts are £££ and becoming scarce. Can be had for £150 for a goodun.
Cosworth YB - Well, youll know already that these are £££ and very expensive to repair. Finding a good one for pennies just doesnt happen.
Porsche transaxles are very expensive, as are the engines. I was looking at 911 engines when researching.
Ive got loads more, but give me a shout when youre more clearer on what youre doing and ill share what i can.
Kindest Regards,
Richard.

Or just introduce boost pressure to increase it for you. a large supercharger or twin turbos would be interesting.

Mazda v6 on an audi transaxle should work nicely.
Supercharger would be good if you like the smell of burning rubber.
Twin turbos will work even better on a 7, but only if you are prepared to weld 2 manifolds.
Matt
(from my perspective; if you want more than a 4 pot Ford then you should be thinking BEC)

Had similar plans to go light and high revving with a bike engine but have just succumbed to my original passion - a big mid mounted longitudinal 4.2
V8. Should keep me busy anyway and at 300hp stock it should be fun enough to begin with. And cost me less than I've seen mazda v6's go for
on fleabay!

You might as well use a B5 S4 engine V6 2.7l which already has the Audi box and the twin turbos. 330BHP on K03s or upto 500BHP (and more if your
pockets are deep) changing the turbos to KO4s and improving the fueling/intercoolers.

Well, I'm going this route, but with an inline box for my Sprite.
I've just bought a complete engine, Superchip ECU, loom and all the ancillaries from Ebay and paid £400 for the lot. Which I don't think
is bad for an engine RR'd at 199 bhp. Ok, buying a complete car and breaking it is cheaper, but the Mrs won't let me do that. Another
£60-80 to get a gearbox here, £180 for the adapter kit from Claire and I'm about ready to go bar the clutch actuation. So maybe £700 for a
complete drivetrain! Maybe not the cheapest option, but for a solid 200 bhp, 8K+ rpm and a V6, I don't think you could do too much better.
