k16 rover 416si
just done head gasket on tin top 416 si, skimmed head new bolts gaskets etc.ticks over perfectly and revs smoothly to red line whilst
stationery.problem is when the car is driven it cuts out at junctions and will not idle. checked for leaks on inlet manifold and seems ok also checked
idle control valve again seems ok. any body got any ideas?

Probably worth cleaning the idle speed control valve with carb cleaner, they sometimes look OK but it helps to clean them . Also how did you check for
air leaks? try using WD40 sprayed around manifold etc , revs will sometimes rise if leak is found . rechceck all sensor wiring . HTH

Starting with the items that don't cost anything to fix.
Check the pipe between the inlet manifold and MEMS ecu is clear be very carful disconnect at both ends before blowing through NB the connector on
the ECU is brittle and gets more fragile with age.
Also check the earth for the ecu is clean and making good firm contact-- the thread on the bolts tend to become coil bound so a new spring washer and
bolt helps. It is located on the bonnet landing panel adjacent to the left headlamp.
Check the temperature transmitter are connected correctly the one for the ECU has two connections the one for the instrument cluster only one wire.
However my prime suspect is the crank sensor on the older k series with the sensor at the back of the engine these tend to give trouble with iffy
connections after major engine or gear box work is done. Usual symptoms are cutting out at idle or failure to start.
