Viento RV8 engine first run!!

Had my engine running for the first time yesterday, was dead chuffed, flipping nervewracking moment tho!!

Bought a new Weber 500cfm carb for it the other day as the holley 390 i had was of unknown history and I didn't want to spend ages faffing with it. Since it was quite a while sinced i finished building the engine I stripped off the inlet manifold and slackened off the rocker gear and re-lubed up all the cam and lifters etc, oiled up all the rocker gear and then bolted it all back together, put fuel in the tank, tested the pump, tested for sparks and then plugged it all together - and woohoo it started!

couldn't run it for more that a few moments cos the noise was 'expect-an-asbo-in-the-post-the-next-day' kind of levels! So haven't had a chance to do all of the cam break-in stuff yet, have to build myself an exhaust first!

Very chuffed with it all tho, deffo a big moment, feels more like a real car now

tried to video it but sound was too loud for the camera, so heres a pic instead

Piccy

Great Stuff!!!

Looking at your pic, even with the Rover lump in there there's still loads of room! Should have put in a Chevy 5.7!!

Verrreee nice
Depending on the type of air filter housing you have, you may have to swap the fuel inlet fitting on your carb to a downward facing banjo type.
I have the same setup as yours and found the underside of the air filter fouled the fuel pipe. My Edelbrock filter housing is dished underneath, therefore the fuel pipe stopped it from seating properly until I fitted the banjo fitting.

Cheers

Dave.

Great piccy...

Right.. RV8's have a habit of not starting when hot. This is due to the heat percolating the fuel in the carb. Its a common problem with 4 barrel Carbs on RV8's.

I got a "Phenolic" (Techy name) spacer and it has helped considerably.

Edelbrock do one which is what I used. its about 10mm (ish) thick plastic / composite material. It comes complete with longer studs and was less than £15.

Also the RV8 Sparks can be a bit wimpish, although I had an Intermotor Sports coil (non ballast), the sparks were still weak. I fitted a new Lucas coil with ballast resistor, and again it improved the hot starting. The old coil was not that good when it got warm (it was a non ballast coil correctly installed before anyone asks)

I am not saying you will get these problems, but the Heat Spacer is a well known issue with 4 barrel carbs on RV8's.

Good Luck with the rest of the build, and will we be seeing you (with or without the Viento) at Newark?

Just a quick question, did you check your oil pressure, before starting it?
Rovers have a nasty habit of not drawing the oil up to the oil pump after being rebuilt or standing for a long time.
The trick to get them to prime is to pack the pump gears with vaseline. This helps create suction in the oil pick up.

cheers for the tips guys, wrt the air filter someone else mentioned this too but I'm planning on putting on one of these:

so hopefully shouldn't have any clearance issues.

oil pressure was ok - warning light went out as soon as it started as I'd already primed when i built it with some vaseline and a drill, although don't have an oil pressure gauge yet, only going on the warning light.

cheers for the heads up on the heating problems - thankfully I think i already have the spacer/insulator plates - the one I've got is a sandwich of 3 thick gaskets and 2 ali plates, but I bought it primarily as a spacer when i was trying to get my holley 390 to clear the inlet manifold.

I'll remember about the coil/spark issue when I've sorted the exhausts/cooling etc out as I wasn't quite sure whether I needed a ballast resistor or not with my setup - I've got an intermotor coil and am using it with a ballast resistor as my hanyes manual showed a ballast resistor on the SD1 and the coil was supposedly for an SD1 too.

Cheers.

Well done mate.

They do make a superb amount of noise with the manifolds off, don't they.

Is it worth adding in the oil cooler while your at this stage ? I fitted mine about 400 miles after start up. A lot easier to do the plumbing now than post SVA.
