Rover 1.8 to type 9 - which clutch?
Hi Guys,
Wonder if you can shed some light on a problem.
I am trying to get all the parts together to fit my 1.8 K series in my MK. It will be mated to a type 9 box with a caterham bellhousing.
The question is:
What clutch and flywheel do I need? someone reckoned that the 1.4 k series cluth and fly was necessary in a kit car.
Also what clutch cable are people using?

If you're using the 1.8k flywheel, I *think* you'll find it's too big to fit inside the Caterham bellhousing. If this is the case,
then you can use a 10" flywheel from 1.4/1.6k. This has the advantage that the Ford 190mm/23spline clutch from the early Sierra is a perfect fit
on the Rover flywheel, even the locating dowels line up. This is the same clutch that is used when fitting a type 9 to a crossflow, so a search on
this forum should turn up some part numbers.
I've just recently been through this exercise, also used the Sierra release arm and bearing, and it all bolts up just fine, has yet to be driven
in anger though.
If you are going to use the 1.8k 12" flywheel then ignore all you've just read, although you MAY find a 210mm/23spline clutch from a later
Sierra would do the job, but you'd definitely need to check this first.

To add slightly to my previous message, the Rover 1.4/1.6k clutch obviously will fit, but there are issues with this when bolting it all to a type 9.
Main problem I found was that the Rover clutch protrudes from the flywheel less than the Ford jobbie, and hence the release bearing (you'll have
to use a Ford one) almost falls off the end of the guide sleeve when fully operated. You'll also find that the release arm runs out of travel at
one end of the aperture in the bellhousing. Otherwise it's just fine......
