speedo cable drive

gearbox is 4 speed, (escort mk 2 probably) and engine is 1300 xflow - not sure if gearbox & engine are from same donor.

I know there is some small gears from the gearbox to the speedo cable and I think the ratio vary according to engine size (due to different wheel fitment).

Is the speedo cable geared up (rotates faster than engine) or down (rotates slower than engine)?

TIA.

Rotates much slower than the engine. It takes drive from the output shaft of the gearbox and is then geared down.

Yep Roughly 1000 rpm at 60 Mph

Most speedos operate at around 1000 cable turns per mile. This number the TPM is what is required to get the speddo calibration right.

On old smiths speedos the TPM is printed in a tiny font round the edge of the dial near the bottom usually it varies between 850 to 1200.
