Sourcing my Zetec?

Although I've yet to purchase my chassis I'am already thinking of getting hold of my engine so I can do some work on it now as a winter project. Plus once the chassis arrives there isnt going to be alot of room left in the garage.

What are my options for sourcing my engine, I'am pretty sure that I'am going down the Pre'95 2.0 Zetec EDIS/45's route.

My favoured option at the moment is to get a complete second hand Mondeo, I've seen plenty around the £500 mark locally. Then I can see it running, know its history/mileage and get the engine effectively deliverd for free. Once I've removed the engine I can either e-bay off some the car then get a local scrappy to take the shell away.

I've read on this forum that people have got their Zetecs for around the £200 mark, but where from and how are they deliverd?
Some kit car firms state on the website they can supply engine, eg Tiger will supply a 2.0 Zetec from £650'ish but this seems a little pricey.

Has anyone every tried fitting their carbs/throttle bodies/megajolt or what ever to their donor engine while its still in the car? I know you might struggle on a Mondeo as your carbs might not fit between engine and bulkhead. I quite fancy this idea as I would get to 'prove' my engine before transplanting it. Or am I being stupid/wasting time....a critism welcomed...

Thanks
John

I have though about the whole megaquirt set up in the donor car. Means you have a test bed while you have working on the engine. And as my car has an engine means I can still use it while im sorting out my new one.

I wouldnt bother going for the 45s route. The price they are going for you can get bike throttle bodies with manifold and megasquirt for that price.

But if you do I will have some Weber 45s up for sale soon!

Sub 300 quid i s the going auction rate for an early Mondo with longish MOT, engines are just about bullet proof even a rough 150k miler is unlikely to need engine work.

Tiger quoted me 500 for an engine.... they come up on ebay for about 250/300 every not n again but 1.8 are MUCH more common. and its rare to find a 2.0L Pre 95 on ebay, if your doing it over the winter bide your time and wait one will crop up on ebay for a decent price

Don't buy one from Tiger...they are over-priced and very grey (don't ask!) If you can get yourself to Aberdeen I can get you one for £50...know a man that knows a guy who owns a scrapheap. They get new stock every day - typicaly a 2 week turn around cycle in the yard and theres always loads of zetecs to choose from!
I also wouldn get webbers unless you've got a good reason....bike carbs are much cheaper and work a lot better....Oli.

Thanks for the advice, just to clarify then - are bike carbs different from bike throttle bodies?

Since the above advice I've been reading up a bit more on bike-carbs. Seems like a really good idea.
I've spotted at chestersportscars that they'll do a set of carbs on a zetec manifold for £375. All cleaned up rejetted accordingly.
Scanned ebay, can find plenty of bike throttle bodies but no carbs.

Eh...??? Try this... Linky

Search for carb* in Motorcycle Parts and accessories.

You need (according to myth and legend... ) a set that are off a bike with similar BHP output - I've got a set from a 600 that gives around 100bhp - plenty for a 1.6 pinto !

Custom manifolds are available, but really not worth the cost IMHO.

Also, a lot come with Throttle Position Sensors - useful if you go down the megajolt route, as no need to try and work out how to retrofit to the carbs.

Cheers

Peter

I got mine form a friend who scrapped his Mondeo.

You could get it running in the donor with carbs and MJ but why create all the work. If it runns in current format then the engine is good, all you need to do is sort the fuelling and ignition. There are plenty of base maps around for a zetec which will get you started so all you are left with is jetting a set of carbs or mapping fuelling if you go injection. This is the bit I am a bit aprehensive about but it is supposed to be fairly simple to get a workable mixture.

Bear in mind a 1.8 from an escort will have benefits like flywheel, water pump and sump but will have less power than a 2.0.

I have gone for the 2.0 but am now looking for the 1.8 parts to transplant.

I have bike carbs on my pinto but think that TB's will be a better solution as injection will be easier to fine tune.

Go for the 1.8 zetec in an Escort. the 2.0 engine needs the 1.8 flywheel, clutch, water pump, and sump to make it fit in a rwd 7.

Then put some 2.0 cams in the 1.8, a set of bike carbs, megajolt and you have 155bhp.

The same from a 2.0 is around 165bhp but you still need all the 1.8 parts.

Thanks, I may well go for that option. I've spotted a K-Reg Escort 1.8 Zetec at a local garage for £350, I might go down and have a look.

Pete, if custom manifolds are worth the trouble or money what the other option? Make the existing zetec manifold work with bike carbs using some creative engineering?
Thanks for the e-bay link, 600 sets!!

£350 for a K-plater sounds a lot...

But at least you can hear it running etc.

What I meant was that the very nice custom polished chromed or plated custom setups are a little expensive - bit like Webcon Alpha really...

Find a local engineering shop that can cut you a manifold blank, 4 lengths of exhaust tube and fanny's your grandma...

4 lengths of silicone hose, and you're done...

Total cost...?? £50...??

Cheers

Peter
