Where to get gearbox and axle reconditioned?

Hi,

are there any companies that can be recommended to rebuild a 1300GT escort box to standard spec. I would also need the rear diff doing as well. How much would it cost and are there any publicised prices on the internet?

Cheers.

Hi prices for reconing a 4 speed box is usualy £150-£200 depending on how manny bearing need replacing and syncros need to be changed.

Diffs usually get done for £100 for a std diff or £120 for one with some trick little mods to help them last longer in a race car.

Companys- BHG _ ROAD AND RACE TRANSMISSIONS - PROCOMP (me). And i am shure there are some more depends on where you are. I take it this is for a locost racer as the other thread on the engine.

cheers matt

Hi,

I'm in cumbria, though I travel all round the country in a van, so distance isn't really an issue. Yes its for a racer matt, so we recon £320ish, tops for a recon exchange gearbox and diff? Thats brilliant - a lot cheaper than I thought it'd be. I will definately be in touch once I've got the old bits out - do you tend to recondition customer's original units or exchange them?

One last thing though, is there any difference between a standard rebuild and a competition rebuild? For example, would our £200 box and £120 tricked out diff be the transmission equivalent of a Randall engine - ie the best you can hope to get to stick within scruteneers/championship rules?

If not, and it is necessary, how much would a top whack box likely cost?

Cheers again.

If the boxes have to use std ford internals (which i believe they do) then the difference between a trick box and a crap one is more down to good old fashioned detail attention, and that doesn't always go hand in hand with a big price tag, a bit of experience adds a lot to the speed of that sort fo job and brings the price down.

You soon learn in racing that the "BIG NAMES" are often not necessarily the ones to have.

Hi the gearboxes have to be std ford ratios at the moment but as some people in the championship will say that can also include any ford ratio IE mondeo - transit-ect. Obviously not what the club intended it to mean so from 2008 onward there will be a change on the g/box regs with only certain ratios allowed.

Currently the best ratios being used by most of the front runners are the original 1300 gt ratios so that should be good enough for most applications.

Recon wise we recon your g/box and diff as we dont carry a stock of already done parts except for the customers spare ones that are being done ready to go back in when needed.

If you search on the yahoo locost forum you will find all of the b#ll S##t being talked about the gear box ratios and there costs for the verry special bog std boxes as the proper trick supposed std ones acctually cost £900-£1000 but there are only a few of them and they wont be legal for 2008.

cheers matt
