Slimming down a type 9 bellhousing.
I am trying to fit a zetec to my car and have come to the conclusion that i am going to have to move the engine back a couple of inches.
I can modify the tunnel a little if really neccessary but looking at the bellhousing it appears to have a lump behind the starter motor pinion that is
sticking out more than neccessary and a bit that could be removed behind the clutch release arm that is also close to the tunnel.
If I remove them and make a cover out of ally or fibregalsss to fill the hole would it weaken the bellhousing to much?. I will radius the ends etc and
make sure there are no stress raisers, im also thinking of removing the big lump on the bottom of the bellhousing to allow me to lower the gearbox a
little further.

I think you should be OK paul....can't imagine it would make that much difference to the strength of it. I was planning on doing the same with
the lump on the bottom so will be interested to see how you get on. Hows the megasquirt coming along with your xflow? Oli.

IIRC the lump at hte bottom doesn't give much clearance with the flywheel & is as low as the sump from the engine (with a mod'd
sump).
you might get a 1cm of extra clearance - is it worth it?

Its probably not worth spending a lot of time on it but even 1cm extra will help, i have my sump level with it at present but the corners do stick out
a bit , I will probably just trim it level with the rest of the bellhousing. My main plan is to make the bellhousing fit further back in the tunnel
without having to do major work to the tunnel .I can move the passenger side upright tube a bit and offset the engine slightly and if I then remove
the excess behind the starter motor and fill it flush I should be able to move the box back at least a couple of inches, which will then allow me to
just modify the bonnet and not have to do the nosecone.

how much longer is a zetec than a crossflow?
i've got my type 9 in a standard chassis with less than an inch between the bellhousing and the chassis. The crossflow has a few cm to spare
before the nose.

Ron did that for one race - and only one race. The scruitineers where NOT happy.
