Engine numbers and registering your car...

Hi
I've got a 1600GT crossflow engine - but the engine number is indecipherable. The casting numbers are clear as is the date code plate (so I can establish the exact age).
Will I need the engine number for registration and SVA?
Any suggestions will be gratefullt recieved!
Cheers
Dave

I was told by my local DVLA during home inspection that i could register without an engine number.

you need proof of age for SVA, if this is linked to an engine number then they will need to read it.

Have you tried wire brushing over it?
Other trick is to spray with white etc paint then lightly sand over the top - might leave it readable.

you could try and get hold of a local insurance assessor - they can sometimes raise difficult engine numbers using acids or similar.

If you've got the donor log book and the donor had the original engine, then the engine number forms part of the chassis number i.e.:

Chassis number GCAFAK086190
Engine number AK08619

Often true for many Fords.
