Breathing (Just)

I know there are other threads on the site covering this, but any suggestions.........
My XFlow has a new tin breather tank fitted to the crankcase side outlet. I have a pcv valve (yes thats valve twice, I know) but I dont have the rubber ? gommet thingy that fits in the tank and around the valve. Can you still get these, does anyone have one ?.
Also, where should I vent the pipe to once I get the valve fitted ? I am running twin 40's and have a normal oil fill cap with an alloy rocker cover.
Any ideas ?

Make a small header tank with a drain going back to the rocker cover. The top of the header tanks needs to breath to atmosphere.

I'm doing my breather/oil catch tank setup at the moment.

Heres my hardware setup:




I had hoped to connect as follows:

A - C
E - B
Filter on D for rig to breath.

Will this work with E lower than B?
Or should I raise the tank so that the bottom is higher than B?

Outlet A is just the knock in adaptor that Burtons sell, so theres no valve anywhere in the system. Is this ok?

BTW

I'm running 40's too so no breathing through manifold.

Fifer - I've got a couple of those valves sitting around, do you want me to send you a grommet?

Dave, I also missed your comment on the knock in adaptor from burtons. I cant find this in their book ?
With this in mind, does this do away with the Ford tin tank on engine side ?
Other problem, I have a Vulcan alloy rocker cover and there is not a breather conection in it ?

Getting confused again !!!

The tin tank thing (two pipes and a small oblongish box) - is what I call the valve.

The whole thing obviously comes out and you replace it with the push in job from Burtons, but lo and behold I cant find it in the catalogue either for the life of me, give em a ring they're usually pretty helpful.

You need a X/Flow breather adaptor.

Its just a bit of machined alloy with an oil pipe stub at 90 degrees to a cylindrical tube that is a tight fit into the regular breather hole in the block.

You then pipe from this rather than from the tin box thing.

Re rocker cover:

Has it got a little round bit with no paint on at one end or the other, on the top surface?

This is where you need to drill and fit and oil union, I brought my cover off e.bay with outlet already in place.

Ask on here though and omeone will tell you the best way to do the drilling/tapping and attachment of union.

On the pic of the old tin breather adaptor -is it the big rubber grommet at the bottom of the pic that you need?

Thats the very thing, I can use this with my PCV valve to connect to the breather pipe. I also see what you mean on the rocker breather pipe connection.

Hi Gazza,

Thanks for the input.

I always thought that the xflow "sucked" through the filler cap, so if thats the case why wont the air being sucked through the oil tank filter by the rocker cover connection bring the oil back into the head?

I dont think I have enough height available to get the tank bottom outlet above the rocker cover height.

Any ideas?

The bottom end pressurises and pushes the air and oil mist out of the sump into the rocker cover. The problem gets worse as the engine gets older and rings wear, gaps increase. Some engines used to breathe the air back into the air filter so it was burnt by combustion, same as feeding it into the manifold.

Well confused now.

So u r saying that both the block breather and the the rocker cover union are blowing out. Where's the inlet then?

Why does the standard oil cap have a foam breather in it , u telling me it's normally supossed to blow out through that?

Just been and measured and there is no way that a 2L catch tank can be plumbed in with the tanks bottom union above rocker cover height.

The rocker cover union is the heighest point in the engine bay!!!!

Help - stuck.

The crankcase pressure varies with engine speed and wear. That is why the catch tank has to breath to atmosphere.
Usually all oil collected in the catch tank will drain back into the engine when it is not running.
If you are pushing that much oil out of the engine that the tank can't cope then it is time for a new engine!

I kinda figured that much oot.

I was hoping that I could use the vaccum to draw any oil in the tank back into the rocker cover.

So I need to get another union in the rocker cover and one in the sump?

1. Breather outlet to 1st rocker cover inlet.
2. 2nd rocker cover union to oil tank.
3. Oil tank drain to sump union.
4. Filter on second inlet on tank.

Not too complicated then. Must be a simpler way round running this many connections around the engine bay? surely?
