Welcome Simon. Hopefully one of us can help out, but we could do with a bit more info. I'm guessing it is a bike engine you are using. If so, what type engine (blade??)? Has it always had this problem? Have you changed the clutch?

Dont just build it.....make it!

try starting it in first with the clutch fully in, if it jumps then the clutch is definitly not disengaging (you probably new that, but hey, all good!)

then maybe try actuating the clutch with it all open (equvilent of the g box or bell housing off if it were a car engine) and see where the give is. Someone who knows bikes will undoubtedly help!

does the clutch pedal have any resistance in it? u know, does it feel like you are moving the spring?

You have discribed clutch drag, i.e. clutch not disengaging. We don't know what engine it is;

SO WILD GUESS

Ball bearing missing at end of clutch pushrod. (fell out during stripdown)

Sorry if I'm wrong.

Too much is just enough

Did this just happen all of a sudden, or did it transpire after you had fiddled with the clutch?
Perhaps, as type 907 says, the bearing fell out when you were fiddling with it.
The cable may have dislodged itself at one end or the other.
Is the cable new? Perhaps it has stretched. What adjustment have you got on the cable? Is it properly adjusted?
Perhaps a homemade cable support bracket has bent.
Things don't just go wrong, there's always a reason. Try tracing back the problem/your interference.
