not really any point asking on here as everybody has their favourite engine, and everybody has always done their installation for two pence, making a zillion hp with total reliability and zero weight...............

however, in the real world, its difficult to beat the vauxhall XE in terms of power per £, BUT, and I didn't think I would be saying this, they are getting thin on the ground now in "useable without rebuild" condition.

For that reason I won't be supplying my customers with any more used XE's (having said that I won't be supplying ANY used engines at all now, only rebuilt)

I will offer a rebuilt XE, but I will be the first to admit that if you factor in the rebuild cost of the bottom end, then a Duratec in good enough nick not to need a bottom end rebuild makes a lot of sense.

Its not chalk and cheese, there are many out there who would have you believe that the duratec is night and day better than the vauxhall XE, well it's not, its a tad lighter, has a weaker bottom end, needs more work to get the same power, BUT has great parts availability for very little money, and that is starting to be the stumbling block with the XE.

I'm afraid that whatever anybody says, the zetec and ecotec (very similar units in many ways) just don't hold a candle to either of the above, though they are very good units, and I for one will now be pushing my customers towards the ecotec for rwd vauxhall conversions just because its so cheap and easy to get, in rwd format, from a dead Omega.

As for the post mentioning the 300hp M3 engine and box for £1500, yea, if its either stolen or broken!

We were looking for one for a customer the other day and there is a LOT of tat out there!

Retro RWD is the way forward...........automotive fabrication, car restoration, sheetmetal work, engine conversion retro car restoration and tuning

volvo redblock turbo or even a T5
Huge Pferdestärke potential for very little money complete with donor car. Bang for buck its tough to beat.

I am biased but the ecotec is a very good option also.
