no, not drillings; use a hole punch to mark it ; that way you don't remove any metal (ok, it isn't gonna upset the balance bit time but .....)

Ned, I cut a piece of the old rear belt cover off with the bolt hole nearest to the tdc pointer attached to it and bolted it back onto the oil pump, so I still have a pointer with no rear cover.

The vee pulley on the front of the engine may not be keyed but will only go on in one position, it has vernier holes just like the flywheel does.

Cheap dial gauges here

and for the record if you unscrew the tip from the dial gauge a mountain bike spoke will screw back in in it's place. Simple cut the spoke and file the end off round for a long reach gauge.
