Thanks, have slackened off the bolt at the bottom and the top, it moves freely but seems to hit it's own bracket after just 1/8" of movement towards the block.

Never did get the alternator to move further, but in the end it was enough to slip the belt on and off.

New water pump is on and sealed each side with blue, just wait until tomorrow night to fill it up and hope it doesn't leak anymore!

In the end once the belt disc was un-bolted and the pump was away from the block it just came out past the shocks - the Halford replacement was ever so slightly shorter so went in by the same route a touch easier.

Thanks again to everyone who replied - I was quite pleased with a one hour refit time which included the alternator, cambelt cover and all the hoses. And at £25 for the part and blue it was a nice cheap fix too.

You don't need to wait until the gasket sealer goes off , you can refill cooling system straight away. DO NOT forget fresh antifreeze
