zx10r
I have the chance of a zx10r engine with 35,000 miles. I know its an older engine bout 18 yrs old its for next to nowt is it worth using I have eard
they are a bomb proof engine, Just thought it might be good for the next project. Has anyone had any experience of this engine? I have heard it
running and it sounds and runs fine??

I'm using the ZZR1100 engine in mine, which shares a lot of the components with the ZX10 engine and is about the same age.
I keep an eye on ebay for these engines and they are up for auction at £200 - £300 at the minute. So if you can get it for less then you are doing
well.
You won't get the same performance out of an old ZX10 that you do out of the current model! Paul Fisher was quite a bit quicker than me when we
were at Bruntingthorpe earlier this year and at Teesside.
It all depends what you want / are willing to spend. I built my car on a budget and am really happy with the performance to be honest. Bangs per
buck goes a long way in my book.
I have however killed a couple of engines, which is a danger in using older engines. The first one didn't stay in second gear, which I
couldn't tell when I bought it (and was probably why the bike came to be scrapped / broken!). Mind you I did loose all the oil out of it when a
hose split. Replaced the hose, re-filled it and did another 1,500 miles before the 1st to 3rd and 3rd to 1st gear changes became impossible.
I replaced that engine with another old ZZR engine, which didn't last too long. The no3 big end went and when I stripped it down, it turned out
there was a cable tie blocking an oilway!
Touch wood, the current engine has done over 2,000 miles without significant problem. It uses a bit of oil and I occasionally get leaks from the
cooling system, but then it is 18 years old!
A new gasket set retails at £150 so if the engines go pop, I'll buy a new one, rather than rebuild.

Among others, myself, minitici, Russbost, daviep and Mr. Guinness are all users / ex users of the Big Old Kwak engines.
Mine is a ZX10 as I believe are both engines in the Furore.
I'm a fan, because they're a bit old, solid and cheap, but still do that whole 10,500 rpm / sequential shift / dog box thing that attracts
everyone to bike engines.
And for me, 137bhp is probably enough if I'm honest.

I had the 2007 zx10r engine in my last Indy,you do get a bit of extra performance,but its not as much as you might think,these older engines have alot
going for them,they usually produce very near the same torque figure of the modern engine,they are cheap as chips,so you do not have the be too
concerned at them going bang,or them developing a gearbox fault,when I took my car on track it was always on my mind that the engine would go bang,and
I would be left with a big £1500 to £2000 bill,if I was building another BEC track car,I would be looking at the older zx10's or zzr1100 if its
at the right money and your building on a buget,you can't go far wrong
