R1 Clutch

after my disaster a couple of weeks ago i have a new cluch assembly to install this weekend. My question is arround the retaining bolts for the spring they have to be torqued up to 8nm but how do people do this as? as it is a spring do you do the bolts up till the spring is compressed onto the studs then measure the torque or do you thumb tighten them (not compressing the spring) and then in a cris cross pattern do a quater of a turn on each until the torque value is reached?
