2.0 Pinto. 5 speed convershion

Hi Guys. I would like to fit a 5 speed gear box to my 2.0 Pinto. I believe this a fairly common mod? I have got hold of a 5 speed type 9 gear box. I see the input and output shaft are different to my 4 speed. Anybody know if I can just use a different clutch? Which one?

You should just need the clutch to fit the 5 speed input shaft. Is that bjohnson of London Mayor standing, are we going to see Locosts exempt from congestion charge then Boris ?

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I didnt think they were different?

Oh unless youve managed to get your hands on the stronger v6 one? If so you need to get the input shaft machined IIRC

Well the 2L pinto and 5 speed box (you have a type 9 or MT75??) were used in the Sierra so thats got to be the obvious answer. There are a few options for the flywheel / clutch / release bearing so ensure its all matched. What flywheel are you using currently??

Dont forget your propshaft too.

if you are going to replace the clutch you only need to get a std 2.0 pinto clutch, from burton power they are about £80

I'd guess that your old 4 speed box has a 7/8" input shaft with 20 splines

and a type 9 has a 1" shaft with 23 splines (as does the MT75)

have a read at these: (down the left side of the page)
http://www.burtonpower.com/technical_1/technical_articles_default.aspx

so assuming its a type 9 and you have a std. manual pinto flywheel - you need a different friction plate and maybe release bearing too (or the whole clutch kit to make it easy) - one from a sierra should do the trick, 2.0L 1982-86 (i.e. one with a pinto)

and a prop of course
