You can buy a brand new 2L black-top Zetec (as per the Focus) for £700 from Raceline and ebay. Its not a 1.8 but i'd take the extra 10bhp any day. Just confirm the engine has an engine number on it

linky to Racelline

and a 1.8 new on fleabay

prepare to make some mods to your car, the exhaust is on the opposite side on a zetec so will involve moving your silencer to the other side etc

Good point........... might be worth considering a Duratec for that reason - the exhaust exits on the drivers side

If I were you I'd change it for a duratec, at least the exhaust is at the same side and if the budget stretches, it's a lighter engine

Go and get one from the breakers, they are cheap and reliable. If you start getting into rebuilding one it will start to cost more than a good s/hand one. I've taken a 128,000 (far from pampered life) engine apart and found very little wear. Get it fitted and running and then maybe port the head and grind the valves in. Fit a 2ltr as the costs are the same apart from poss a £35 water pump swap and poss a lighter flywheel (if you must).

I'd go for a 2.0 Blacktop. No need to replace the water pump - just move one of the idler pulleys that comes with the engine to keep the pump turning the right way.

Mine was £85 for a 60k Mondeo lump.

I wouldnt bother with the duratec unless your happy about spending £££'s on gearbox applications, exhaust for a zetec being on the opposite side than pinto is not really as bad as re route of wires. You will have to change the header whichever engine you change to,i would go for one of those new crated £700/£750 black top zetecs as they bolt straight onto your existing Type 9 gearbox once the spigot bush is in the crank.

Good point by robocog as the 1800 he has is sitting in a crate and ready to go.
