Crossflow - Zetec engine swap - Newbuild

Hi all.
Yes, another zetec question. I have browsed previous topics and http://www.zetec-cat.co.uk/, but it's hard to find the info I need.

I am building a book locost. Plan was to fit a 1.6 Kent/ Crossflow engine with Escort Mk1/2 gearbox. Engine and gearbox supports are already fitted on the chassis. For registration purposes (emissions) I need to fit an engine with EFI, lambda and 3-way catalyst (whatever that means).

I want to use the Escort Mk1 wiring loom.

What would be the best engine to get, and what parts do I need from the donor?

I think a Mondeo 1.8 blacktop from 05/98 on and a Sierra gearbox will do.

Parts:
- wiring loom (partly or complete???)
- ignition key (???)
- ECU
- Exhaust manifold with Lambda
- Inlet manifold with injectors and air mass gauge
- Catalyst

Is this correct or am I missing something? Any other thins to take into account? Will a silvertop do? (it's cheaper).

See my blog for pictures.

Thanks, Maarten

Any thing after 1994 will have pats security so you will need the matching transponder that is in the key.

I think a firm called Mev have found away around this but I doubt they will share.

So you want as much of the loom as you can lay your hands on.

Maf
Tb
ecu
Keys ( master plus any others you can get)
Lambada
Fuel pump wouldnt be a bad idea.

If you get the pre pats ecu its very easy to wire up.

What is Maf and Tb?

From mechanical point of view, will it be new engine supports and presto? Or do I need to make more modifications?

Mass Air Flow meter.

Get from same car as the ecu

Throttle Body

This has the throttle position sensor.

Engine is going to be taller than the x flow so you will need to budget for sump mods to give ground clearance.

If silver tops are cheap there then use one.

The exhaust is on the opp side so you may need body mods.

Tb I would assume is throttle body, MAF is a mass airflow meter that sends information to the ecu, you may also want to try and pull the sensor from the exhaust if it has one (probably on the downpipe).

Thanks guys. Exhaust side is no problem, since I stilll need to make the rest of the car. I would prefer the exhaust not to be on the side of the steering column (LHD!), i.e. opposite of crossflow.

Any other major modifications? Engine supports will not be so hard, will they? For the crossflow I made them myself, and I am pleased with the result. I Hope the zetec supports can be the same style?

zetec exhaust passenger side, go for pre 95 engine no problem with emmissions I run a 1.8 on twin 40's no cat. Engine mounts need makinf, modification to steering to clear oil filter, relocation and manafacture of alternator bracket, water pump from an escoret 1. zetec as it runs the opposite way, neww water pump pulley (ribbed) mondeo one is smooth. to get rount the ecu problems use megasquirt or alternative you will need to collect an EDIS unit from an early escort (ebay) inlet manifold the plastic mondeo item is too large and hits the top[ chasis member my car is 4 inches wider and the inlet still posed a problem, spigot gearing for the end of the crank. suggestions about using different clutch parts have been brandished about. I and a friend use the mondeo item with the sierre release bearing and standard relase arm cable operated and have had no problems in 8000 miles between us

if you are building a LHD car and you prefer the exhaust to be on the opposite side of the car then you are better off going pinto or duratec, both the x-flow and zetec engine have the exhaust primaries exiting the LEFT SIDE of the car, in your case the drivers side and the side your steering column will be.
