trouble with tintop
Need some advice,
Driving my mondeo diesel last night to work I lost power above 2000 revs and can hear a whinning noise, particularly in low gears, also at the same time
preheater light starting flashing constantly, after work this morning had a lot of trouble starting it which must be down to glowplugs, preheater
light still flashing constantly and no power as before, any ideas where to start to look.

The whining noise concerns me a touch.
I dont have Mondeo (BMW320D) but have had a series of faults.
Had a loss of power ages ago that turned out to be a vacuum hose - i think it was affecting the pressure regulator on turbo (down on boost). Some cars
are servo motor controlled rather than vacuum though.
Does your car accelerate above 2000rpm or stop at 2K? If it goes beyond does it just feel like its off boost?
i think the turbo's on diesels spool up around 1800 rpm or so - does the whining noise co-incide with this or is it there all the time? Does it
rise and fall with revs?
i could be wrong but would have thought the preheaters etc wouldnt make such a noise.
What vintage Mondeo? common rail? TD?
On mine you dont have to wait for heaters to kick in, just turn key and start. When it had starting problems it was due to 2 injectors leaking back
and reducing the fuel pressure on start up at the common rail - pressure sensor didnt see correct pressure so didnt tell ECU to tell injectors to
fire.

I had an older TD mondeo. Not common rail or intercooled (96 P iirc). That always felt down on boost above 2K. i part ex'd it before i got it
fully fixed, but i narrowed the fault down to possibly a split hose.
Its always worth checking the filters etc. Im guessing that an old fuel filter that is partially blocked could give a fuel pump a hard time and make
it whine due to increased load. Its always worth checkingbreathers are in goog condition, EGR's not gummed up etc.
Does yours have a MAF? When the fault is there have you tried unplugging it to see if it drives better?
Are all hoses and pipes in the right places. Seem to recall someone saying that if the pipe on cool sdie of turbo that feeds air to inlet manifold
(sometimes via intercooler) has come off or is on way off you will be down on boost and possibly the noise is just the std turbo noise that is more
audible.
It could be something simple.

I dont suppose you can roughly determine where the noise is coming from can you? Ie is it from front of engine, more to rear, on turbo side etc?
How miles has it done? Full service history etc?
Have you noticed any change to the exhaust gasses? ie more smoke recently
Im no expert but the extra info might help a Ford man diagnose better. Have you changed anything recently, had it serviced with some extra bits
replaced? When was fuel filter last changed? Has it had any major parts replaced in the past - like turbo, fuel pumps etc.

Glowplug light flashing is normally an ECU-reported fault - trying to remember what part fails on these on a regular (every 70k-ish) basis..might have
be been air flow meter?
Could also be a split intercooler - common(ish) problem with modern TD's...
Long live RWD...
