MR2 Turbo donor

I've seen a few posts where people have discussed dropping the 4AGE engine into a locost.
My current build has a 1.6 xflow lump in with a type 9 box.
How much work would it be to take the engine from the tubby and drop it into build? The car is a front end write off, but starts and runs and would have access to the whole car.

The bog-standard 4-AGE is a popular engine, especially in places like Australia where they have regs regarding the age of engines to be used in kit cars.

Once all the ancillaries and unwanted bits are taken off then it's quite a small engine, not much bigger than a crossflow. I've seen one in a Locost and it doesn't take up much space! I'm not sure whether the turbo would spoil that though.

The only thing you'll have to hunt around for is a new gearbox - either an original Toyota RWD one, or I believe that you can get an adaptor plate or bellhousing for a Ford Type 9 box (maybe RAW Engineering?).

HTH,
David

Would the type 9 take the power/torque though?

thens theres the new engine mounts ECU and associated wiring also new exhaust possible new bonnet or side panel depending on exhaust exit. They definitely fit into the type seven chasis. Cost wise it would be higher than fitting a zetec due to the bellhousing or adaptor plate. You may also want to uprate the brakes as you will probably have around 80 bhp mor going through the car

I beleieve it is a lighter engine than a zetec and revs avout 1k higher. I would leave it as my winter lay up project and get out and enjoy the 1.6 crossflow

I would have the whole car as a donor, so ECU and ancileries wouldn't be a problem. I understand the wiring concepts so should be ok with that.
The car's not SVA'd yet so would get it through with the 1600 lump then when I've had some fun with it I'd tackle this lump. It's just come up at a bargain price for the car which has tempted me.

The 4AGE was from the mark 1 MR2. The turbo MR2 uses a 3SGTE engine. Its a completely different engine to the 4AGE.

Some mark 1's did come with a 1600 supercharged engine though but there very rare.

Yeah, I'm aware they're different engines, it was more I know it's been done with that engine, has it been done with this too?

Also, brakes aren't an issue, I make brake kits for quite a few cars so can get a set made up for this without too much of a problem.

^^^^^^This is right, 4age is also v light (for a car engine) at 80KG, easy fit to Type 9 with bellhousing change and Ford spline clutch plate. 3SGTE is a much bigger and heavier motor, not heard of one in a locost but will probably find there are lots now! People are fitting bigger and heavier motors so I guess, why not?

I had a Rev3 SW20 MR2 Turbo 10 years ago, this had the 3SGTE engine.

With the zener diode mode, decent exhaust and decat it pushed out around 300bhp. It was easily the fastest accelerating car I have ever owned, foot down in any gear and it went like a scolded cat.

This engine in the same form was put in the celica GT4 rally cars, you really want to source the correct toyota gearbox from a supra or celica to handle the power.

Regards Mark
