What have we bought ? (Zetec)

We've been looking for a cheap spare engine for a while. Having bought/won THIS for a decent price, I've been wondering (dangerous for me).

How difficult would it be to fit this along with the stock injection/sparks system that comes with it into our car ?
We're running a 115bhp 1.8 silvertop on bike carbs and megajolt at the mo', but it needs a good session on a rolling road to set up properly, and as always we're looking into the cheap option

Is it as simple a system as it looks, and does anyone have any links to any good sites with some info ?

Cheers all

Looks like you have the correct bits to do it. ie pre pats ecu.

I am playing with one at the min.

Make sure you get the maf (mass air flow meter) as they can be a pain in the ass to get.

The main down side is the largish inlet manifold. You can either cut a hole in the bonnet like Tiger did or make up a manifold like the griffin inlet plenum. There are a few other ways to do it aswell.

Ps if that engine is the 130ps the inlet manifold and ecu are wort over double what you payed for the engine.

so cost wise you could have the best part of 130 bhp for nowt. If you can put with the BIG manifold.

I sold a throttle body from one of these for what you paid for the lot.... a bargain and the holy grail of early zetecs. Non-cat, so easier on the emmisions.

Just check the engine code (back of the engine, on the block) says either RQA or RQB...

it is possible to run the standard ECU with individual throttle bodies and a plenum/MAF to get over the height clearance problems as ive done it and had it on a RR @ 149bhp as link.
ford ECU and throttle bodies
but by the sound of things if you are all ready running a 115 1800 silver top the only differance to the 130 spec is the cams and ECU so unless you think the carbs and megajolt are running poorly might be just as well to stick with them or just put the 130 cams in your engine

Yeh a lot of these are passed of as 130's and there not.

The inlet manifold will have HO cast into the back of the runner on no 1 cyl. If it says SO its not a 130.

It will run fine in a kit but it will need the Maf and Hego to run.

One I wired earlier. Its running on carbs as I didnt have the inj manifold but it is running spark and firing the injectors ect.

Wow, lots of replies !

A few questions to answer...

PaulTiger, although the carbs we have run fine, the manifold was a "get it going" type effort and I'm sure it's lacking power.
I know people have used 600cc bike carbs on bigger engines, but they need setting up properly. At the very least.
Oh, and err, yeah, we're "still" using the original mondeo cast iron manifold, cash is short ;(

Chris_Smith, unlucky Have you tried the JBidWatcher program ? I'm having a lucky run with 8 second snipes at the mo'

Big Wasa, Ta for the info, sooo, if we don't use it, it's worth cash then eh ? .....
The inlet shouldn't be a problem, although space is very limited under the bonnet, there's already a hole on that side from the old engine/carb combo, so it's not as if it's a virgin bonnet.

SS1 turbo, RQA RQB right, cheers.

Will 121, the carbs/engine has never seemed to have the power it should, either that or we've got used to it

Also, I don't think we've ever replaced/fixed a part on the car without trying to "upgrade" or generally wee about with stuff while we're at it so this holds promise

Thanks to all, Tony

The 130 bits do fetch good money on ebay

a 115 inlet manifold is worth a fiver

I've got bike carbs on my zetec atm, and a set of bike TB's to go on. Will the standard ECU run OK with these? Is the MAF essential or is there a way of wiring the LC1 AFR in??

when i had mine checked on the rolling road it all seemed ok (with a MAF fitted), the operator said that the MAF and TPS are used to monitor the load on the engine for ignition advance/retard not necessarily mixture, ive heard of people running without the MAF but that must comprimise things

Had a look at the bodies last night, they have a MAF and TPS on them. Which ECU will I need??

Having looked at will's set up he is using the plate with the injectors from a fiesta zetec and has the gsxr 600 Tb's mounted to that. So all they are doing is opening the butterflys.

I have set of r6 Tb's on the way and I am going to see if I can mount black top injectors in to them then run it with the standard eec-iv ecu. A pre Pats one

It would be interesting to see if it could be made to run with a Map sensor instead of the Maf as it would be easier to use.

The ecu is mapable if you do a search on google and can also be chipped.

as Big_Wasa said if you are looking use a standard ECU would think it needs to match the sensors/injectors being used as if the ECU is pulsing a different flow rate injector may be confusing, the ford ECU can be chiped but as soon as soon you look at the cost its not worth it as might as well than go down the mapable ECU route.

Just to finish the thread off, we sold the ECU and inlet on ebay and got over £50 for 'em.

That works out at a free engine for us, result
