Mi 16 oil surge

i have an mi16 engined 205 i am about to run in sprints and hillcimbs. The car was run in forrest rallies for a long time and i am wondering what if anything was done about oil surge.

i can't get hold of the previous owner unfortunately so i don't know what he has done

am going to take the sump off on saturday to see if its baffled or had the pickup moved.

I don't want to go with the expense of fitting an accusump if its not needed.

Can anyone recommend a cheapy independant oil gauge and big light setup or any advice generally

Not usre if you're aware of them, but 205GTi drivers is a very good forum, with lots and lots of info on Mi16s in 205s. Will probably be your best bet.

The Mi16 engines suffer horribly from oil surge; my friends 205 rally car went through several engines after he started using slicks.

He tried various different sump baffles, but none worked including the official Peugeot Talbot Sport item. The only way he made this engine reliable (ish!) was to dry sump it. If you are not planning on running slicks you may be ok, otherwise I suggest an Accusump at the very minimum.

Hi Liam,

I've run an Mi16 205 for 5 years now, baffled the sump myself and it's never so much thought about having low oil pressure. (and thats with an SPA gauge to keep an eye on it not the crappy standard one... )
If you are handy welding ally or know someone that is drop me a PM and in the mean time I'll try and find some photos from I did mine.

sorry to hijack, but does the 8v also suffer from these issues? I get big drops in oil pressure if I go 50 round a corner in my 205.. I was stupidly hoping it was just the dodgy dial - considering how crazy the fuel guage is!

The 8v is normally pretty good on oil surge. We tracked ours several times, and it never missed a beat. The MI16 is considerably worse - but I can't tell you why 'cos I don't know!

8v's are fine usually.GTi-6 sumps fit on no probs and have some baffling as std. GTi-6 oil pump gubbins can help as well.

If the gauge is being consitant, i.e, it has low pressure all the time, mine used to be in the red, or it always drops smoothly then that's not the problem. They only usually go crazy or read low.

Reason for the MI problems is in the head i belive, drainage issues and the like. Fiting an external reutrm has been attempted, not sure if it worked though. The surge seems to also be dependant on the engine, so some more than others.

Best bed is nice baffles, lots of oil, and a light that is off some use, maybe even a twin stage light, so the engine isn't dead when it comes on.
