r1 emissions

having failed my SVA retest on emissions (03 r1) I am trying to work out where the powercommander mapping is wrong - my readings are

co = 4
hc = 4
lamda = forgot to ask

in real terms what do these figures mean the engine is doing and how do I get them nearer the correct reading?

I did take the car to a rolling road for an SVA map so was hoping the emissions would be fine. As this failed I am looking at tweaking things myself but need to understand the whole emissions thing first to make sure I follow the correct path

thanks for any help

Sorry, but those numbers don't mean a lot!

Test is

Fast idle (2500-3000rpm).
CO <= 0.3%,
HC <= 200ppm,
Lambda between 0.97 - 1.03

Idle test(450 - 1500prm),
CO <=0.5%

Hard to know what your is. If that CO figure is 4% it's rich and/or the cat's not working/up to temp (Been covered several times so do a search in IVA/legal). Can you get it to an MOT station and ask them to do a BET's test on the emmisions (same as IVA test)? Have you tried phoning the test station and asking for a copy of the test result?

I am happy to send across the SVA map which my 03 R1 passed with, it was a map from someone else but it failed on my car, so I tweaked it a bit

the tester didnt record the actual figures as the readings were so far out - it was that bad that the testing machine stopped working so he tried another machine and that broke too !!!

I did ask for the figures at the end of the test and thats when he told me 4% and said that all 3 failed (CO, HC and lambda).

I had thought that I had got the cat upto temp (part of the testing equipment melted during the test) but will look at it again

I will try and get my hands on a gas analyser so that I can spend time on doing tests myself to see if I can identify the problem

spdpug98 - thanks for the offer of the map but will hold off until I can see if I can trace the problem in case my own map is ok

Take the offer of the map and compare it with yours. You don't have to use it.

Get to your local MOT centre, and ask to use their machine for some beer tokens. Just don't melt their probe (still awiaitng a bill from my local mot centre!).

Remember, you can now drive it to somewhere to get this sorted. As others have said, it sounds like it is rich - can you borrow a wideband lambda sensor to check? I found once I had the lambda spot on (lambda = 1, afr = 14.7) , the emissions dropped well within limit.

all mot centres in Northern Ireland are state run so dont think anyone would risk their job for a few beer tokens - I will try a few local garages to see if they have the right machine and work from there.

I do have a few different maps from a while back so will compare them to my rolling road map to see if they are anyway close
