Zetec engine sat around in the background... what would you do to it?
I was pished as a fart back one sunday back in january this year, when I randomly won a '94 silvertop 1.8 zetec engine for 26 quid on ebay.
Came with in and out manifolds, LOADS of different looms, ecu, fwd gearbox (which is now in the bin) and various other bits. Had the head cover off
yesterday to have a quick look at it. The cams are immaculate and the residual oil in there is lovely, golden and clean - which from a 15 year old
engine with a reputed 85,000 miles on it, suggests it's been well looked after.
The plan is still to build the roadster wholly with my sierra (1.8 cvh and type 9 box) to get it through IVA and on the road. The sierra is
mechanically sound and lovely to drive so I know it all works well.
Now once the roadster is finished, I'm planning on pouring all my time and effort into the zetec to make it something really special. Just
looking for suggestions & ideas of the sort of thing I could do with a 1.8 zetec?
Seen various things such as adding tonnes of performance parts and tuning to quite respectable power outputs (180bhp), OR the crazy end of the scale
like fitting turbo's and the like.
What would you lot do if you had a spare engine sat in the background, (one where you could take as long as you want to get it just how you want it
before dropping into your 7)? Parts? Prices? Power Outputs? Details and Ideas please

Personally, i'd look for a 2L blacktop and tune that instead!! Go through IVA with the 1.8 and then swap over for a 2L with cams (and the
blacktops solid lifters), porting etc at a later date. A 2L engine should give you about a 10bhp headstart on any tuning you then do.
May as well IVA it with the Zetec anyway - its pre-Aug 95

the sierra is same year and I've got everything geared up for the cvh (a good friend has kindly donated the dwg files to make up an inlet
manifold (plate) so I can use the gsxr srad carbs I've acquired) plus I know the CVH works with the gearbox and all associated ancilliaries no
problem
the zetec is just kind of sitting around doing nothing and I've no real idea as to how it runs etc apart from what the seller told me. With all
this in mind I was just pondering the possibilities of turning it into something special over a long period of time, then dropping it in one winter.
All very much day dreaming type stuff but it makes my world go round lol

Id go for 2 litre cams, Honda type R forged pistons and rods. Lightened flywheel and maybe get the crank lightened. Then get the lot balanced.
The jenvey throttle bodies and ecu.
That should see you good power.

personally i would get some miles on the car with the engine you start with.. later on when you get bored you can swap it for somthing more
exiting.
but beware that going mad with the tuning can cause driveability and reliability problems later on.... ask anyone with a Hyabusa turbo engine, they
will tell you how wodeerfully quick they are.... but when you ask them how does it do pottering around the town...... they will tell how crap it
is..
Just my 2 pence worth

How much money do you want to throw at it?
1800 Zetec, with Escort GTi or 2.0l cams makes 130bhp as standard. Take off the CAT you won;t be using, add some bike carbs or TB's and a
megajolt/megasquirt (respectively), you should see min. 140-150 brake, if not more.
Then again, you could throw 1,000's at it, go for Weber carbs and the gubbins, or even alpha TB's and management, depends entirely on your
bank balance and if you're a true "locoster"....

cheers charlie,
been on the zetec-s owners club forums and had a bit of info re: converting zetec-e to rs1800 spec - essentially sounds the same as what you're
suggesting...
http://www.zsoc.com/forum/showthread.php?t=151619
looks like rs1800 spec is easily attainable, and while several people have mentioned that duratecs would be better, the older zetec-e engines seem to
be just as readily available but at a fraction of the cost... think I've found a game plan

Blueprinting it? Should strengthen it.
Disclaimer: no experience with above, but seems like a good idea before you start adding performance parts to things with iffy tolerences to begin
with.
