broke down today
well lastnight i worked on the tapit gaps and retimed the crap lumanition and this morning i went out,oh and i put a earth from the lumanition strate
to the battery,
it was running fine for a good 2-3hr of on and off driving,i just poped home to drop some bits off and went out again to get some 2core shilded
cable, about 3miles from home,it started to loss power 'jurking' so i got it going again and headed for home after 2mins of driving it did
it again, after that it wouldnt start atall.
so i got towed home,
i went over the wiring the 10th time,i had another coil so i put that on went around the block and it was fine, when it got up to temp,it ran for a
cupple of mins then died,
has anyone had this kind of problem with the lumanition optronic kit?

Is it that the coil only needs 9volts ???? so breaking down when hot

Have you got the right coil?
Is it a 12volt one or one that needs a balast resistor?
If it should have a resistor and you dont have one it will knacker it running 12v continually!

I am not sure exactly which lumentition you have fitted. There are 2 variants, I would need to google to tell you the difference.
I have one fitted in my Land Rover. There is IR optical sensor and chopper disc in the distributor and then 3 wires to the amplifier module.
It works well but the one origianlly fitted developed an intermittent fault - It would cut out at random moments - fixed by replacing the module -
the coil and sensor, which I initailly suspected, turned out to be ok.
The instructions state you miust not use ballast coil i.e. your coil should be 12 V not 9 V type.
The way to tell, is to disconnec tall wires to the coil and measure resistance of the primary.
12 V coil will be 3 ohm
ballast coil will be 1.5 ohm.
Despite what people are saying, I am not aware of anything wrong with using this igntion system.
Now that you have broken down, chekc that you have a spark
Remove lead from saprk plug, fit a spare plug and hold close to engine earth.
Remove distributor cap - if you are lucky, the gap in the chopper disc is in between the sensor, if not, you must turn the engine a smige.
Then use a piece of carboard to put in between the sensor and the coil will fire, or it should fire - you'll see a nice fat blue spark.
If not, then remove all plugs and repeat test but turning engine over.
If spark is fine, you need to look eslwehre for your problem.

i have the sliver one,i got the coil to go with it,its the mega spark 4 coil with a balist,
it ran fine then like you say cuts out but it seems when it gets hot
i have checked that it fires, and thats all fine, then i run for a bit and then it stops,
thismorning i ran it for a good 2hr no probs????????

sounds like an overheating issue on the coil. the 2 hours running was prob due to the lower ambient temperature in the mornings.

just to add what I'd written, now that I have the instruction leaflet.
suitable: for coils or coil/ballast combinations of not less than 3 ohms.
so in other words, you cannot use a ballast coil without the ballast - I hadn't made that clear above.
also not suitbable for low resistance coils -less than 1 ohm electronic igniton coils <--- n/a to you.
the wiring diagram shows 12 V going to igntion switch, then to ballast then to coil.
note that the ballast coil is not switched out in the usual fashion. .... but I cannot see that it would be a problem since that is only
switched out during cranking.
I would suggest you check the ballast is wired correctly.
Where have you mounted coil? It helps if it is in a stream of cool air.

An old friend of mine had the same problem with a xflow engine using lumenition, after a lot of head scratching it turned out to be a faulty regulator
on the alternator.Car ran fine fine when cold but the alt was pumping loads of power all the time playing havoc with the vital electrics.
Worth puting a meter on the battery when running, mates battery was also getting a tad hot
