Edis Advantages?

Im going down the route of a megasquirted zetec. Everyone keeps on about edis. But MS can run a coil directly? So whats the advantage of EDIS??

I seem to recall there was problems with the avaliability of the "drivers" a while back - I seem to remember people having to have spares for some reason.

in the MS manual it says that the drivers in the MS can blow up if running a coil directly, if they are over loaded with current or something along those lines.

EDIS is a safe and reliable system that has limp home mode if anything goes wrong.

You could run the cooil separate to the megasquirt which is what i plan to do





How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

EDIS Pros:

The standard V3 MS PCB only has provision for one coil driver, though a second can be kludged on fairly easily.

The original VB921 coil drivers are a bit fragile, getting the coil dwell wrong will fry them. Newer, better protected drivers are now available.

Using the internal coil drivers you have several wires switching 5+ amps very quickly and regularly going into the MS. This increases the chances of having EMI problems. EDIS separates all high current switching from the ECU.

EDIS is a very robust unit made to automotive standards, reliability should be excellent.


EDIS Cons:

Less compact, requires sourcing EDIS box and plug.

Limited to even numbers of cylinders, and EDIS units for 6 or 8 cylinders can be hard to find.

Have to use a 36-1 trigger wheel. Ok for Ford engines that already have these, but annoying if your chosen engine uses an alternative trigger pattern.

No possibility for cutting sparks without external hardware. This is more of a problem with Megajolt, since fuel cut is a much better idea anyway if you are using MS.

If it will help I've written up the whole process of converting a 2 litre Zetec to GSXR TB's and Megasquirt on my website. (Rolling roaded last week...174bhp, 152 torques and still running standard head and cams). Anyway, I would strongly recommend using the EDIS unit. It just takes some of the risks out of building and setting up your own ECU and system. You can disconnect the ECU and get a steady 10 deg advance from the EDIS unit which is ideal if you're troubleshooting.
