OT VW Camper Misfire

Hi All,

I rebuilt my bro's camper engine over the winter, everything redone. Anyway after alot of sweat n blood we got the bloody thing back in the bus. It starts lovely and ticks over superb. Took it for it's MOT today and it passed! The only problem is it starts to hesitate and miss a little at around 55mph. Now I know we shouldn't be looking at going faster than this as it already has a stopping distance comparable to a super tanker, but!

I have yet to see it after it's run today but i was going to check the following:-

Vac advance
Timing
Carb Icing? I have had to disable the hot air take off valve as it was always pulling hot air (common fault) and I was concerned about overheating.
Plugs
Fuel pump

Any other ideas? He needs to go to the Jam a week tomorrow!

Thanks,
Steve

Check rotor arm. Lots have a rev limiting rotor arm in which the spring can get tired.

New rotor arm fitted although that's no guarantee it's correct. I will check that.

Thanks,
Steve

Check the push rod for the fuel pump isn't worn or stick and also that the insulator hasn't been messed around with. What have you set the tappets to ? When I worked for our local VW dealers many years ago we set the inlets to 0.006" and the exhaust to 0.008" due to the exhaust valves running hot especially on number 3 cylinder. A non vacuum distributor 009? is a good idea IIRC set the timing at 29 degrees at 3500rpm

Rusty, i replaced the fule push rod so think that should be fine. I set the tappets to 6 & 8 as you mentioned alot of the VDub sites recommended that rather than the figures in the manual.

It is the standard Vac distributor not the 009. I will check the timing, whats the insulator?

Thanks,
Steve

The insulator is the part that the push rod runs in , was a fairly common problem for the push rod to stick in it when hot which causes running problems

Hi Guys,

Just a follow up to say it's fixed. Tried everything, anyway it turned out that we'd got crap in the carb.

It was a little bit stuck in the inlet valve to the carb bowl, the bore at that point is little more than a mil so it was starving the engine at speed.

Thanks for your help,

Steve
