Hiya Greg.
According to Mr. Haynes, the std oil for the C20XE is 10W40 to 20W50, API SG/CD, but I guess it ultimately depends how far you're going to tune
it. Opie Oils (oilman on migweb) usually recommend an ester-based synthetic for anything approaching race spec.
Having had to strip & refill the lifters on my Vx head after using 5w40 synthetic, though, I don't plan to use it again: I've gone
back to a 10w40 semi-synth again. The tappets were refusing to hold pressure, hydrauliced (sp?) and were as noisy as hell... All fine on 10w40 -
after a couple of seconds, they're quiet as anything now
Just my 2p's worth.

Ran my Cavalier GSI (Redtop) on 10w40 for years. All fine.
I use Vauxhalls own... used to be castrol in a different bottle.
Plus i get it for about £5.50 for 5 litres

10/40 is good if you know the exact condition inside and out of your engine, but i always ran my Astra/Cav/Calibra on 15/40 - the engines always
seemed happier on them.
Still, personal preference - try each one if you've got the spare cash and time to do the changes!
