Type 9 gasket Q

I've stripped my type 9 box and just received a new gasket + seal set.
The original gasket between the tail housing and 5th gear housing is steel whereas the new one is paper.
Steel is 0.013" thick, paper is 0.016" so the thickness is not an issue. But why a steel one originally? - never seen such before,
especially between two alloy castings.
Just curious.
