Sump baffling..

DOes anyone have any knowledge on the subject, whats good, bad or ugly? Ive seen normal open wet sumps, lust big enpty pans, and Ive seen some heavily modified ones before.

Below is a pictures of a standard sump from below, with the base cut off to reveal the internal cast baffles.

Can anyone tell me how well this will work in a longitudinal orientation, on very grippy tyres on a track? Will the current setup be sufficient?

Not very well as there is no baffling across the sump, it all runs along its length which is what you would expect in a transverse mounted engine.

Puy simply it's all about keeping the oil around the pump pick-up.
On my engine the switch for East/West to North/South required a windage tray to stop the oil climbing the inside of the block under heavy cornering. This has watch-pocket slits to aid drain-down back to the sump. Extra baffles were introduced with the idea of restricting the flow out from the pick-up area.
Some have used trap-door baffles i.e. swing back towards the pick-up but won't allow the oil to go the other way.
If you go to www.guy-croft.com there are some pics. on there of sump baffles which might be interesting.

PS If you are reasonably happy with the current set-up why not put trap-door baffles at the 2,4,8 & 10 o'clock positions i.e. opening inwards to allow oil into the pick-up area? That's assuming the lube system doesn't rely on some splash going onto the other areas.

Given the diagonals I don't see the difference between transverse and longitudinal orientation. The only thing you might add would be a transverse mid baffle, but everyone Ive spoken to says long corners are more of an issue than braking anyway.

The sump has a close fitting flat plate with just a hole for the pickup, so that should stop it climbing the block. I need to add to the capacity somehow, probably wings and gates id imagine.
