oil temperature

just wanting to confirm my thoughts on this.

was driving home tonight through very heavy rain and lots of standing water/ floods and get an oil temp alarm. check the dash and its reading 149.
i had only been driving at a max of 30mph and often a lot slower for quite a few miles and water temp was normal.
the alarm is set at 115 and by the time i had got to the temp screen it was 149.
near home(10 miles later) it got a bit erratic and as i got to my garage the dash read normal.

i'm guessing it must of been caused by the water on the sensor as i can't see any way the temp can get that high under very slow driving plus also the speed it got up there.

just wanting confirmation that there is no way the actual oil temp can of been 149

if the car behaved normally, and the water temp was normal, then i would agree that it was the water.

on Vauxhalls they have an outdoor temp sensor that displays on the dash. On my astra the sensor is missing, and the cable that would connect to the sensor is hanging at the bottom of my bumper. when its really wet outside my display reads -35deg C when its dry there is no reading

water can short the sensor --- to the gauge lower resistance higher temperature

agreed, yesterday I tested my temp gauge was working by turning on ignition and shorting it to the chassis rail. Temp shot up to full, the water will have got in there and done the same thing.

called into the garage this morning, ignition on gauge read 13 then started the engine and it shot immediately up to 149. switched of and back down to 13 again.
don't quite understand how starting the engine can affect the reading on the dash.
i dried of the sensor and connector and give it a good squirt of wd40 and will try again later

at least i know for definite the dash was misreading and i haven't cooked the oil

still not right, i think the sensor must be playing up.
driving along temp climbing steady up to about 50 then i switched display. about a minute later alarm comes on and its reading about 130 and then gets a bit erratic and climbs to 149(max for the dash).
on the way back to the garage it read 130-140ish and a couple of times dropped to about 100.
1 1/2 hours after parking back in the garage i turned on the ignition and it read 50 but within a couple of minutes it had climbed up to 130 and then several times would drop straight to 90 and then back up to 130 fluctuating a lot all the time.
only thing that concerns me is i have a track day at oulton park on wednesday. just a bit wary of disconnecting it when on track.
will give etb a ring monday and see if they can get me a new sensor by tuesday
