Lucky, lucky, jammy b*****d!

Got home yesterday evening after a bit of a blast. Opened the garage and drove it in. Got out and noticed spots of oil, looks back and sees a small pool!

Looked into it today, and it seems that the rubber hose for remote-mounting my oil pressure sensor had sprung a leak at the end of the rubber! Oil level was below the dipstick - and I had to top up nearly 1.5 litres to get it back to max! Sounds like quite a bit in an engine that takes 4-and-a-bit!

Any further and I could have been in real bother! Thankfully after temporarily fitting the old oil switch and filling up I've been for a good hard "test drive" and nothing blew up, so fingers crossed there was no damage caused!

Ironic really that the thing I fitted to help me reduce the chance of oil-related problems nearly caused one itself!

Ive got the oil pressure problem on my renault engine in the kit car, which i think is down to worn big ends. When the engine warms up, the oil thins, increasing friction, causing more heat, thinning the oil further etc etc.

The only way to keep the oil pressure up, is to rev higher, but today i expected the head gasket to go when the temperature hit 110 degrees! It didnt, and i got the car home and cooled it without any major drama but its only a matter of time!!

Still. Ive got my 130ps zetec coming soon, and ive just picked up my TB's....

Kindest Regards,
Richard.

It has to be remote-mounted - the sensor is too heavy to be connected directly to the block, via tee-piece or otherwise.

My original hose just ran from the block the the sensor which was mounted to the chassis. I didn't have any support for the hose, though it wasn't that long. My guess is that the hose has been flapping about due to the wind caused at speed, which has ultimately fatigued the rubber joint. I think when I replace it I'll be making sure it's routed such that it can be P-clipped to minimise movement!
